SPELLING BEE

🇺🇸 Vanya Shivashankar

'Scherenschnitte', 2015

The word was German, for the art of cutting paper into decorative silhouettes. Scripps declared Shivashankar and Gokul Venkatachalam co-champions of the 88th national bee on 28 May 2015. NPR reported co-champions crowned for a second straight year; Sports Illustrated and the Christian Science Monitor covered the same finish; Fox News noted the competition ending in a tie for the second year running.

That second consecutive tie was what the coverage seized on. The 2014 result had been the first in 52 years; a repeat twelve months later suggested something structural about how good the finalists had become.

The first sibling champion

Her sister Kavya Shivashankar had won the Scripps National Spelling Bee in 2009. When Vanya took her share of the 2015 title, the family became the first to produce two national champions, and she became the first sibling of a past winner to win in her own right.

The dynamic that produces such results is not mysterious. A household that has taken one child through the study routine has the lists, the methods and the experience of the competition's rhythm. What it cannot supply is the nerve required on the stage, and the evidence for that is how few siblings of champions have ever managed it.

Five years of climbing

She first competed nationally at eight, in 2010. Her finishes climbed and dipped rather than rising cleanly: a tie for tenth in 2012, a tie for fifth in 2013, a tie for 13th in 2014, and the title in 2015. She attended California Trail Middle School in Olathe.

That jagged line is more typical of bee careers than the smooth ascent, and it is worth noting for anyone reading these records as a genre. Progress at the national final depends heavily on which words a speller draws, and a worse placing one year does not mean a worse speller.

Child Genius, and the record since

In the same period she won the American television competition Child Genius, on Lifetime, taking a 100,000 dollar scholarship. That detail is recorded in reference coverage of the series rather than in the bee reporting used here, and is noted on that basis.

Beyond 2015, the sources used here say nothing about her university, work or current life. She was 13 at the time of the win.

Why the 2015 tie mattered

Two consecutive ties changed the way the competition thought about its own format. The bee's endgame relies on a finite list of championship words, and when two finalists keep answering correctly the list runs out, leaving co-champions as the only outcome the rules allow. Happening once in 52 years is a curiosity. Happening twice in two years is a signal that preparation had outrun the design.

Scripps subsequently tightened the format to make outright winners more likely, which means the 2014 and 2015 pairs sit inside a short and probably closed window in the competition's history. Shivashankar's name belongs to that window, and so does the family record that came with it: two sisters, one dictionary, two national titles six years apart.
