Thirty-eight out of forty-two

The row reads 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 3. Each problem is marked out of seven, so five sevens represent five complete solutions, and the three on the final question is partial credit on the hardest material on the paper. A score built that way is different from the same total assembled out of near-misses.

Eighth place put him directly behind a very narrow group: five perfect 42s, Hongyi Tan of China on 40, and Qiao Zhang of the United States on 39. Below him, three contestants tied on 37. The gold cut-off in 2025 stood at 35 points, which means Vo finished three marks clear of the bottom of the gold band and four short of the year's best non-perfect score.

Leading the Vietnamese team

The Vietnamese results in 2025 run from Vo's 38 at rank eight down through Minh Hoang Tran on 35 at rank twenty-seven, Dang Dung Nguyen on 34, Dinh Tung Nguyen on 31 and Phan Duc Man Le on 28. Two golds and three silvers, with Vo the clear leader of the group.

One name on that list is worth following. Dinh Tung Nguyen finished 91st in 2025 with 31 points and a silver medal; a year later, at the 2026 olympiad in Shanghai, he scored 36 and took gold at rank fourteen. The published tables make that kind of year-on-year progression visible in a way that very few competitions do.

The field, and what eighth means in it

The 2025 olympiad brought 630 contestants to Australia's Sunshine Coast. Every one of them had already won a place through a national selection process, which in Vietnam involves a sequence of provincial and national rounds followed by a training and selection phase. The contest abroad is the final round of a much longer competition at home.

Against that background, the interesting statistic is not the medal but the position. Gold at the IMO goes to roughly the top twelfth of the field, a band that in 2025 stretched from 42 points down to 35. Vo finished inside the top ten of that band, which is a materially narrower achievement than the medal alone conveys.

What the table records — and what it does not

The firm facts are the organisers' own: country, six problem scores, total, rank, medal, year and location. Nothing here depends on a secondary account, and nothing has been paraphrased from a press release.

That also marks the boundary. No age, date of birth, school, city or photograph appears anywhere in the record. Nothing in the sources gathered here describes how Vo qualified, what he studied afterwards, or whether he competed again. Those absences are listed rather than filled, and the Vietnamese spelling of his name, in which the family name precedes the given names, is a further detail the official table does not settle.

Why Vietnam keeps appearing in these tables

Vietnamese contestants have finished in the top ten of the IMO repeatedly across recent decades, and the official results make the continuity visible. In 2017 at Rio de Janeiro, Hoang Huu Quoc Huy shared first place in the world outright. In 2025 Vo finished eighth. In 2026 Dinh Tung Nguyen took gold at fourteenth. The names change; the position of the country does not.

That consistency is the argument for treating an olympiad result as a national statistic as well as a personal one. A single gold medal can be an individual anomaly. A record of them, sustained across different cohorts and different problem sets, points at a selection and training system rather than at luck.
