CONCOURS D'ORTHOGRAPHE

🇺🇸 Scott Isaacs

Spoliator

United Press International's report of 2 June 1989 was headed "Eighth grader wins bee". The winner was Scott Isaacs, fourteen, from Denver, sponsored by the Rocky Mountain News — one of the local newspapers that underwrote regional bees and sent their champions to the national finals, a structure that carried the competition for most of the twentieth century.

Spoliator is a Latin agent noun — one who despoils — and it is the kind of word that rewards exactly the training a serious speller does. A competitor who knows the language of origin can build it from parts; a competitor who does not must gamble on the vowel.

The years between

The record used here describes a first career that had nothing to do with words: he practised as a chiropractic and naturopathic doctor. Bee champions do not, as a rule, become professional spellers, and for twenty years he did not.

What changed was a request. In 2011 someone advertised on Craigslist for a spelling coach. He answered it. It is a mundane origin for what became a specialism, and it says something about how the modern bee works: the demand for coaching is real enough that parents go looking for it.

Coaching the circuit

By 2016 TIME listed him simply as a spelling bee coach, aged 41, in Denver. The record used here puts a number on the practice: around thirty top spellers coached, and a role as academic director for the Spelling Bee of China.

That last detail is the measure of how far the format has travelled. A competition invented to sell American newspapers now has a Chinese edition, and one of its academic directors is a man who won the American title in 1989. The word lists, the root-language method and the format itself export cleanly; the sponsorship structure does not.

What is documented — and what is not

Documented: a win at the 1989 National Spelling Bee on spoliator, aged fourteen, as an eighth-grader from Denver sponsored by the Rocky Mountain News; a first career in chiropractic and naturopathic practice; the start of his coaching in 2011 after a Craigslist request; roughly thirty top spellers coached; a role as academic director for the Spelling Bee of China; and TIME's 2016 listing of him as a Denver coach at 41.

Not documented in the sources used here: his date of birth; his school; the runner-up in 1989 and the length of the final; which of his students won what; and anything after 2016.

What a coach actually does

Coaching a national-level speller is not quizzing. The dictionary the bee draws from holds several hundred thousand entries, which makes exhaustive memorisation impossible and selection the whole game. A coach's work is triage: deciding which language families the student must master, which patterns recur in the bee's historical word lists, and where a student's instincts break down under pressure.

That expertise barely existed when Isaacs won in 1989, and it is now an industry. The competition did not get easier; the preparation got professional, and the children who reach the final rounds today arrive with years of structured study behind them. A champion who became a coach sits on both sides of that change, which makes his career the most useful thing on this page.
