Ryu Song I

Ryu Song I is a mental from North Korea. Ryu Song I won the WMSC World Memory Championships in Wuhan in 2019 and holds two of the sport's standing world records from that event: 4,620 digits in one-hour numbers and 7,485 digits in thirty-minute binary.

Competitive mental calculation is governed and measured: the Mental Calculation World Cup, the Memoriad and the Mind Sports Olympiad all run standardised tasks — adding ten ten-digit numbers, multiplying eight-digit numbers, extracting square roots and computing calendar dates — so results are directly comparable across decades.

What separates a documented record from a family anecdote is that someone else wrote it down at the time.
