The addition round

The Mental Calculation World Cup is organised by Ralf Laue and held at the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum in Paderborn. Its ninth edition took place on 16 July 2022 and ran to ten rounds: calendar, addition, multiplication and square roots, a pre-announced challenge task and five surprise tasks revealed during the competition.

In the addition round Higa placed second with 31 correct answers, and the results report singles out the manner of it: he solved every question he attempted with zero errors. Accuracy at that level is not a given, because the scoring rewards speed and a wrong answer buys nothing.

Most Versatile Calculator, runner-up

The World Cup awards a separate title for breadth rather than for a single discipline. Higa finished second for Most Versatile Calculator with 308.26 points, a standing built across the whole programme rather than in one event.

The research record behind this page also places him fourth overall in the 2022 competition. The rounds documented in the report support the picture of a competitor strong everywhere: a win in surprise round four, an estimation task, and a share of second place in surprise round two, a division task.

Winning a task nobody could rehearse

The surprise rounds are the World Cup's defining feature. They are announced only during the event itself, so no competitor can arrive with a practised method, and success depends on improvising a strategy under time pressure.

Higa won the fourth of them, an estimation task, and tied for second in the second, a division task. Round wins of that kind say something different from a fast multiplication time: they measure how quickly a calculator can invent an approach rather than execute one.

The field he was beaten by

The 2022 World Cup was won by Aaryan Shukla of India with 604.33 points, recorded in the report as 12 years old. Ono Tetsuya of Japan took second with 559.45 and Mohammad El-Mir of Lebanon third with 542.19.

Two Japanese calculators near the top of a world cup is worth noting, and the result placed Higa among the leading competitors of a discipline whose serious international field is measured in dozens rather than thousands. The World Cup returns to the same museum in Paderborn every two years, and the same names recur across its rounds, which is what makes a podium finish there a standing rather than a one-off.

What is documented - and what is not

This page is built from published results reports of the Mental Calculation World Cup. They record rounds, scores, placings and awards, and they record nothing else about him.

No birth year, age, home city, school or occupation for Naoto Higa appears in the sources used here, and no Wikipedia article was found. Nor does any later result appear: the documented record stops with the 2022 competition, and this page does not extend it by inference. What the report does establish is unusually precise, down to the hundredth of a point, which is more than most competitive disciplines publish about their runners-up.
