🇮🇹 Matteo Bernardeschi

The route through school

The arrangement described by his head teacher, Vito Giannini, was built alongside the ordinary timetable rather than instead of it. While his classmates followed the standard curriculum, Bernardeschi worked through advanced material given to him separately, studied in breaks and in afternoon sessions. Teachers across several subjects, not only mathematics, supported the acceleration.

The measure Giannini offered of where that had taken him is specific: he completed a fifth-year mathematics examination, the final year's paper, in 90 minutes without errors. In total he covered thirteen years of Italian schooling in ten.

Why Italy said no

Italian universities rejected his application on two grounds that the coverage records together: he was too young, and he was poco scolarizzato, insufficiently formally schooled. The second is the more revealing objection. It is not a judgement about ability but about the paperwork of a conventional education, and it is the kind of obstacle a customised route inevitably creates.

The Italian system ties university entry closely to the completed secondary cycle and the maturita examination, and it has little provision for a candidate who arrives early by an unorthodox path. The story was picked up nationally, by Skuola.net in September 2023 and by TGCom24, under headlines built on that phrase: too young for university in Italy.

Berlin

The solution was to apply abroad. He enrolled in the engineering faculty at a Berlin university, reported as the Technische Universitat Berlin, at sixteen.

German universities admit on the strength of a qualifying school-leaving certificate and, for international applicants, on recognised equivalence, with rather more flexibility than the Italian route allows. The outcome is a familiar one in European education stories: a student who cannot be accommodated by the system that produced him is accommodated by the one next door.

What his head teacher said

Giannini gave the most quotable lines in the coverage, and both are about the school's responsibility rather than the student's ability. The first signal to pick up on, he said, is certainly curiosity: “Il primo segnale da cogliere e sicuramente la curiosita.”

The second is a warning about what happens when no alternative path exists. Without one, he said, “andremmo a buttare un talento”, we would throw away a talent. He also noted that the family had responded to their son's abilities with humility. Matteo himself is not quoted in the material used here.

What is documented, and what is not

Firm: the bilingual Vincenzo Pallotti institute in Ostia and its head teacher Vito Giannini; the customised path running parallel to normal classes, using breaks and afternoons; ten years of schooling instead of thirteen; the fifth-year mathematics paper completed in 90 minutes without errors; rejection by Italian universities as too young and insufficiently schooled; and enrolment in engineering in Berlin at sixteen in 2023.

Not documented: his exact date of birth, so the birth year here is approximate; his parents' names; his examination grades beyond the single maths paper described; and whether he remains enrolled. Accounts differ on which Berlin university admitted him, and the Skuola.net interview used here names the Technische Universitat. Nothing in this material follows him past 2023.
