CONCOURS D'ORTHOGRAPHE

🇺🇸 Jennifer Reinke

No questions asked

The detail that survives in local memory is not the winning word but the manner. Competitors are entitled to ask for a definition, the language of origin, the part of speech, alternate pronunciations and a use in a sentence — and serious spellers use all of it, partly for information and partly to buy time. She asked for none of it.

The winning word was chihuahua: Spanish, from a Mexican state name, and a word whose spelling bears almost no relation to its sound in English. Spelling it cold, without a single clarifying question, is the kind of performance that a town remembers for half a century.

Nebraska's first since 1929

She came from Deshler, a small community in southern Nebraska, and was the state's first national champion in thirty-eight years. The runner-up was Anne Clark.

The prize included a trip to appear on The Ed Sullivan Show, the Sunday-night institution that then defined national television exposure in the United States. A fourteen-year-old from a Nebraska farm town appearing on Sullivan is a measure of how much cultural weight the bee carried in 1967.

The library

In 2016 Deshler renamed its public library the Jennifer Reinke Public Library. The Hastings Tribune covered the rededication in June that year under the headline "Library gets new cover"; it had run a family retrospective, "Area family remembers how to spell c-h-a-m-p-i-o-n", in 2014. The Lincoln Journal Star reported in June 2017 on a celebration marking fifty years since the win.

She lives in Hebron, Nebraska, a short distance from Deshler. Naming a library after a spelling champion is a neat piece of civic logic, and it is the most durable memorial any competitor in this collection has received.

What is documented — and what is not

Documented: a win at the 1967 National Spelling Bee on chihuahua, aged fourteen, from Deshler, Nebraska; the state's first title since 1929; a final in which she asked no clarifying questions; Anne Clark as runner-up; an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show; the renaming of Deshler's public library in her honour in 2016; a fiftieth-anniversary celebration in 2017; and a home in Hebron, Nebraska.

Not documented in the sources used here: her date of birth; her school and grade; her education and career; her married name, if any; and anything about her life between 1967 and the retrospectives that begin in 2014.

What a small town does with a champion

The bee's reach into rural America is one of its least discussed features. A competition run through newspaper sponsorship reached towns of a few hundred people, and a child from one of them could compete on identical terms with a child from Chicago. That is a genuinely unusual property in American competitive life, where most pathways run through money and proximity.

The consequence is visible in Deshler. A national title won in 1967 was still being marked in 2014, 2016 and 2017 — not by the bee, which had moved on the following June, but by the town, the county paper and eventually the library board. For most champions the archive thins to nothing after the final. Here it does the opposite, and the later record is richer than the original.
