The set that set the record

The venue was a restaurant and bar in Osaka called L, the equipment a Pioneer XDJ-AERO system, and the requirement an hour-long set in a club environment. Guinness published the record on 19 May 2017, and UPI reported it the same day.

The category is more demanding than it sounds. A DJ record is not a photograph behind a set of decks: it requires a continuous performance, in a licensed venue, in front of an audience, which is why the age is measured to the day. Six years and 114 days is the mark he set.

A drummer first

The coverage records that he also plays drums, which is the detail that makes the rest plausible. Beat-matching is a rhythmic skill before it is a technical one, and a child with a drummer's sense of time has the harder half of the job already.

His favourite DJ, he told reporters, was Avicii, the Swedish producer whose records dominated global dance music during the years Morita was learning. The taste places him precisely in his moment: a Japanese six-year-old in 2017 shaped by the same tracks as the clubs of Ibiza and Stockholm.

How far the story travelled

NPR picked it up on 22 May, the Deccan Chronicle in India on 28 May, and Guinness's own video of the set circulated widely. A record of this kind is built for that: a short, vivid, visual claim that needs no context to understand.

It also sat comfortably in a Japanese tradition of extremely young specialists in adult disciplines, from shogi players to calligraphers, where early professional performance is treated as an apprenticeship rather than a stunt.

What is known about Itsuki Morita since

Nothing, in the sources gathered for this page. The coverage clusters in May 2017 and stops. Whether he still performs, what he plays and where he studies are not documented, and this page does not speculate about a child whose public record consists of one hour in a bar in Osaka.

One related record does appear. A counterpart title for the youngest female club DJ was set in 2023 by a performer known as DJ RINOKA, which suggests the category has remained live since Morita's attempt.

Why Guinness measures days

Age records are the most competitive category Guinness administers, because the qualification expires automatically. Every day that passes makes the holder less eligible to hold it, and the only way to beat one is to find someone younger who can do the same thing to the same standard.

That is why the figure is given as six years and 114 days rather than as six years old. Precision is the whole architecture of the category, and it is why the record has an adjudicator, a venue, a timed set and a published date rather than a claim and a photograph.

There is a practical limit built into the category as well. A club set requires a licensed venue willing to host a child, an audience, and an adjudicator present to time the performance, which is why records of this kind move rarely and by small margins.
