What happened at Lille

France Bleu's headline on 14 May 2018 was a statement of institutional surprise: the University of Lille had never seen this, a student validating his thesis at 17. The doctorate was in computer science, and it made him, in the phrase French outlets used, the youngest doctor in the country.

A doctorate is not an examination that can be sat early. It requires original research, a supervisor willing to take the student, a thesis of several hundred pages and a public defence before a jury of specialists. Every one of those steps is gated by adults who could have declined, which is what makes the Lille date the substantial fact in this record.

The route there

The research record sets out the sequence: the baccalaureat at 12, then a computer science degree at the Ecole polytechnique federale de Lausanne, completed at 16. EPFL's own news service marked the Lille result in 2018 under the headline "IC School alumnus Hugo Sbai is awarded a PhD at 17", confirming that its former student had gone on to the doctorate.

L'Etudiant had already profiled him on 3 May 2018 as "un Frenchie a Oxford": a French doctoral student at 17 preparing to move to the English university. The research record notes that his sister Marion passed the baccalaureat at the same time as he did, and that the pair have since promoted what they call "la methode", their approach to accelerated study.

Oxford and cybersecurity

The research record states that he began a second doctorate at Oxford in cybersecurity in 2018. A second PhD, immediately after the first, in a different field and another country, is an unusual choice at any age, and the L'Etudiant profile was built around exactly that prospect.

None of the sources gathered here reports whether that Oxford doctorate was completed, or what he has published since. That is an important gap in a story whose whole premise is speed, and it is listed below rather than glossed over.

What is documented, and what is not

Firmly established: a computer science doctorate defended at the University of Lille at 17 in May 2018, reported by France Bleu and confirmed by EPFL, and a period as an EPFL computer science student before that.

Not established: his date of birth, the title and subject of his thesis, the name of his supervisor, and the outcome of the Oxford doctorate. The research record gives a birth year of 2001 and describes the family as based in Paris; neither detail is confirmed in the pages read here.

Why a PhD at 17 is different

Early school qualifications measure how fast a child can absorb a fixed syllabus. A doctorate measures something else: whether a person can define a question nobody has answered, work on it for years without a marking scheme, and defend the result against specialists who have spent careers in the field.

That is why the French coverage treated the Lille defence as a different order of event from an early baccalaureat, and why the interesting question about Hugo Sbai is not the age on the certificate but what the research said. The sources gathered here record the first and are silent on the second.
