A clean sheet

Scores at the olympiad run to a maximum of 42, and the scoreboard published by the organisers lists Lou at the ceiling. A perfect paper is not a matter of degree: every problem set for the competition, including the questions written to separate the leaders from each other, was solved to the satisfaction of the coordinators who mark the scripts.

The margin is what makes the result stand out rather than the medal. Ziyu Tang of China finished second on 36, and the group in joint third — Minqi Xu and Yuke Zhuo of China and Shreya Mundhada of India — finished on 35. In a competition where the leaders are usually separated by a point or two, the top of the 2026 table had a six-point gap in it.

The 2026 field

The European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad was held in Bordeaux, France, and drew 247 contestants. Despite its name, the competition is not confined to Europe: the top ten alone contains teams from China, India, Indonesia, Australia, Japan, Canada, Croatia, Italy, Romania and Turkey, and the scoreboard treats every entrant on the same terms.

Behind the leading group the order ran: Danica Odelia of Indonesia sixth on 32, Mălina-Carla Pavel of Romania seventh on 30, Amber Li of Australia eighth on 28, Haruka Kimura of Japan ninth on 27, and a six-way tie on 26 at joint tenth. Lou's 42 sits sixteen points above that tie.

One perfect paper, twice running

The 2026 result repeats the shape of the previous year. At the 2025 olympiad in Prishtina, Kosovo, which drew 214 contestants, exactly one paper was perfect: Yankuan Liu, also of China, on 42. Two consecutive editions, two lone perfect scores, both from the same national programme.

That is a fact about the competition as much as about the contestants. A paper is set so that the strongest entrants in the world are extended by it, and in both years the setters achieved that for all but one person in the room.

What is documented — and what is not

Firm: the perfect score of 42, first place, the gold medal, China as the country, and the 2026 olympiad in Bordeaux as the competition. The scoreboard is published by the organisers of the competition, which makes it a primary record rather than a report of one.

Open: no age, birth year, school, city or photograph appears in the sources gathered here, and no interview or press profile is among them. Nothing states how Lou was selected, whether she had competed in earlier years, or what she has done since April 2026. None of those gaps is filled by inference on this page.

How rare a perfect score is

Perfect papers are the scarcest result in competitive mathematics because they require every question to fall, including the one designed not to. At the 2026 olympiad the proportion was one in 247; at the 2025 edition it was one in 214. A gold medal is awarded to a band of contestants each year, and a 42 is awarded to whoever leaves nothing on the table.

The scoreboard is also the whole of the public record for most of the people on it. Olympiad results are published in full, permanently, and rarely followed by anything else, which is why a page about a perfect score can be certain about the score and silent about almost everything else.
