🇲🇽 Gilberto Mora

Youngest player at the 2026 World Cup, and the youngest to start a match since Pelé

17 years 240 days • Mexico's youngest World Cup player in 96 years • Club Tijuana

Of the 1,248 players named across the forty-eight squads at the 2026 World Cup, Gilberto Mora was the youngest — 17 years and 240 days on the opening day, twenty-six years younger than the tournament's oldest player. He broke a Mexican record that had stood since the very first World Cup in 1930. Then he started a knockout match, which no one that young had done since Pelé in 1958.

Gilberto Mora was born on 14 October 2008 and plays as a midfielder for Club Tijuana in Mexico's Liga MX. By the summer of 2026 he was the most closely watched teenager in North American football. On the opening day of the 2026 World Cup he was 17 years and 240 days old — the youngest of the 1,248 players named across the tournament's forty-eight squads, and twenty-six years younger than the oldest, Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon.

The records started early and they were all domestic firsts. In August 2024, at fifteen, Mora became the youngest player to start and score in Mexico's first division. In January 2025, at sixteen, he became the youngest player ever to make his debut for the senior Mexico national team. Later that year he started for the Mexico side that won the CONCACAF Gold Cup, and he featured for Mexico at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Chile in October 2025.

At the 2026 World Cup he broke a record that had survived ninety-six years and sixteen tournaments. Mexico's previous youngest World Cup player was Manuel "Chaquetas" Rosas, who appeared at the inaugural 1930 tournament in Uruguay aged 18 years and 134 days. Mora, at seventeen, replaced him. The 2026 tournament featured twenty-two teenagers in total, and 891 of the named players were World Cup debutants — a scale that makes the youngest-of-all designation harder to hold than in a thirty-two-team format.

He made his debut in Mexico's opening match and the quality showed immediately: quickness on the ball, sharp changes of direction, and a well-timed through ball that released striker Raúl Jiménez into the box. He then played extensive minutes in Mexico's 3-0 win over Czechia, which closed out a perfect group stage for the hosts.

In the knockout stage against Ecuador he was named in the starting eleven — making him the youngest player to start a World Cup match since Pelé in 1958. The performance justified the selection rather than merely decorating it. Mora completed twenty-two of twenty-five passes, two of them into the final third, created two chances, won four of five duels and made five defensive recoveries before being substituted in the fifty-ninth minute to a long standing ovation.

Manager Javier Aguirre's trust in him deepened as Mexico's run continued. Ahead of the round-of-sixteen tie against England at the Mexico City Stadium on 5 July 2026, Aguirre compared him to two of Mexican football's most cerebral playmakers. The performances also drew scouts: reporting through the tournament recorded interest from Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City, AC Milan and Premier League clubs.

Club Tijuana moved to protect its asset, locking Mora into a three-year contract extension on the eve of his World Cup debut — a deal the club described as historic for it. Mora, for his part, told reporters he tries not to engage with what is written about him, and the wording of that answer is the most revealing thing he said during the tournament.

He is from Tuxtla. His World Cup ended with Mexico's elimination in the knockout rounds, and he was reported to have graduated from school days afterwards. Pelé, who was seventeen when he helped Brazil win in 1958, and Kylian Mbappé, nineteen in 2018, are the comparisons that follow him — a weight he has publicly declined to carry. What distinguishes his case from most teenage breakthroughs at this level is that it happened entirely inside a domestic Latin American league, not a European academy.

A World Cup squad list is one of the few age records in sport that cannot be disputed, because FIFA publishes every player's date of birth alongside the tournament dates. That is what allows a figure like 17 years and 240 days to be stated to the day, and it is what allowed the Mexican record to be traced back to Manuel Rosas at the 1930 tournament in Uruguay. The 2026 expansion to forty-eight teams and 1,248 named players also made the youngest-of-all designation harder to hold than in any previous edition.

Mexican football has produced precocious debutants before; what it had not produced was one who kept the shirt through a knockout round of a home World Cup. The distinction between appearing and performing is where most teenage records quietly collapse, and it is why the Ecuador match matters more than the squad list: twenty-two completed passes from twenty-five, four duels won from five, five defensive recoveries, and a substitution greeted with a standing ovation. Those are the numbers of a functioning international midfielder, recorded on the day, at seventeen.

“Truthfully, I feel really happy, really content to be able to debut in a World Cup. I felt good throughout the match, really happy that I got those minutes the other day.”
— Gilberto Mora, speaking in Spanish, USA TODAY, 5 July 2026
“I don't really like to look at those kinds of things that are said about me. But the times I have heard that stuff, I always try to focus on what I can do: enjoy myself, live in the moment. When it's my time to play, enjoying it and being myself on the field.”

Mora broke a Mexican World Cup age record that had survived ninety-six years and sixteen tournaments.

The Pelé comparison is not marketing — he is the youngest player to start a World Cup match since 1958, and the passing and duel numbers from that match back the selection up.

Unlike most teenage prodigies at this level, the breakthrough happened entirely inside a domestic Latin American league rather than a European academy.
