And he came thirteenth in calendar calculations with 44, an event won by Marc Jornet Sanz of Spain with 71 in each round. Winning the overall title while placing thirteenth in one discipline is entirely normal at this competition: the combined score rewards breadth and punishes a single catastrophic event, not a single weak one.
What the disciplines involve
The four standard events are addition of ten-digit numbers, multiplication of eight-digit numbers, square roots of six-digit numbers and calendar calculation, in which competitors name the weekday for dates drawn at random from a four-century range. Each runs in timed rounds, on paper, with answers written but the work done entirely in the head.
The surprise tasks, from which the Most Versatile Calculator title is awarded, are set by the organisers and not published in advance. They are designed to test improvisation rather than drilled technique, which is why they are scored separately.
The company at the top
The World Cup is held in Germany every two years and remains a small field, in the region of thirty-five competitors from fifteen or sixteen countries. Japan has supplied several of its champions: Naofumi Ogasawara won in 2012 with 828.15, Yuki Kimura in 2016 with 668.64, and Iseda in 2018.
The record was then taken over by the Indian competitor Aaryan Shukla, who won in 2022 and again in 2024, when his total of 819.84 was the highest since Ogasawara's. Against that sequence, Iseda's 757.18 is among the strongest winning totals in the competition's modern history.
