🇺🇸 Saryn Hooks

She was eliminated on a word she had spelled correctly, and the judges had to call her back

Saryn Hooks, 14, at the 2006 Scripps National Spelling Bee

Saryn Hooks was 14, from Taylorsville, North Carolina, and out of the 2006 National Spelling Bee on the word 'hechsher' - except that she had spelled it correctly. The judges' reference list carried a variant. She was recalled to the stage, resumed competing, and finished third. It remains one of the few reversals in the competition's history.

The ruling that was wrong

During the evening rounds of the 2006 Scripps National Spelling Bee, Saryn Hooks was ruled to have misspelled 'hechsher', a Hebrew term for a rabbinical certification that food is kosher. She left the stage eliminated. The Associated Press report carried by NBC News records what happened next: the disqualification was found to be a judging error, and she was reinstated.

The research record behind this page adds the mechanism. The judges' list held a different spelling of the word, 'hechscher', and Hooks had given a form the dictionary allows. That detail, and the account that the error was caught and reported from the floor by another speller, Lucas Brown, come from the bee's own encyclopedic record rather than from the two dispatches cited here, and are set down as such.

What she did after being recalled

Being called back mid-competition is, in practical terms, being asked to restart under television lights after having already been told the run was over. Hooks went back on and kept spelling. She was eventually eliminated on 'icteritious', a word meaning jaundiced in colour, and finished third in the 2006 bee.

Third place out of a field that had begun with 274 spellers in grades four through eight would be a strong result under any circumstances. It was achieved on a night when she had already been removed once in error.

The bee that night

The 2006 final was the first in the competition's 79 years to air in American prime time. ABC carried it from 8 p.m. until just after 10 p.m. Eastern, with a production that borrowed the look of a sports broadcast. The title went to Katharine Close, a 13-year-old from Spring Lake, New Jersey, who spelled 'Ursprache' and became the first girl to win since 1999; she collected more than $42,000 in cash and prizes.

The runner-up was the Canadian Finola Mei Hwa Hackett, 14, who missed 'Weltschmerz'. Hooks finished directly behind them. The New York Times covered the night the following morning; the AP dispatch is the account that records the reinstatement.

Why a reversal is so rare

The bee runs on a fixed reference: a speller is right or wrong against the dictionary, and the ruling is immediate and public. That is what makes the format work at speed, and it is also what makes an error close to unrecoverable. A child who leaves the stage has usually left it for good.

The 2006 case turned on the difference between a word the judges had written down and the word the dictionary permits. Once that gap was demonstrated, the only defensible outcome was to put the speller back. The bee did so, and she then out-spelled most of the field she had been taken out of.

What is documented and what is not

Documented by the 2006 AP report: her age of 14, her home town of Taylorsville, North Carolina, the disqualification, the judging error, the reinstatement, her elimination on 'icteritious', her third place, the field of 274 and the prime-time broadcast.

From the research record rather than the cited dispatches: her school, the variant spelling on the judges' list, and the identity of the speller who raised the error. Not documented anywhere here: her date of birth, her family, whether she returned to the bee, and anything about her life after June 2006. No IQ figure appears in this file.
