🇮🇹 Letizia Martorana

She set the rhythm that produced the fastest Under 19 women's pair in history

World Rowing Under 19 champion, Plovdiv, 9 August 2026 • 7:10.77 — new Under 19 Women's Pair World Best Time • stroke seat

Letizia Martorana rowed the stroke seat of the Italian boat that redefined its event at the 2026 World Rowing Under 19 Championships. On 9 August 2026, in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, she and Carolina Cassani won the Under 19 women's coxless pair in 7:10.77 — a new World Best Time for the boat class, and almost five seconds inside the previous mark. In a pair, the stroke seat sets the rating and the length that the other rower matches. The record is a joint achievement; the rhythm that produced it was hers to establish.

Stroke is the seat closest to the stern, and in a coxless pair it is the only reference the crew has. There is no coxswain calling rate, no cox box, and the bow rower cannot see her partner's blade — only feel it. Whatever the stroke does with the first two strokes off the start becomes the boat's rhythm for the next seven minutes, and a stroke who goes out too hard commits her partner to a race neither of them can finish. The judgement required is closer to pacing a middle-distance run than to sprinting.

That the margin came in a pair rather than a bigger boat is what makes it notable. In an eight, one rower's error is diluted across seven others and a coxswain; in a four it is diluted across three. In a pair, nothing is diluted. The boat is a direct readout of how well two people have learned to apply force at the same instant, over the same arc, with the same finish. A five-second improvement on a standing world best over 2,000 metres implies that matching was close to exact for the entire race.

The championships around them were substantial rather than a thin field: 660 athletes — 367 men and 293 women — from 55 nations, racing 14 boat classes over four days from 6 to 9 August. Sixteen crews were crowned world champions. Among all of that, World Rowing's closing summary of the regatta singled out the Italian pair's time as the headline result of the week, ahead of Great Britain's fourth consecutive men's eight title and the introduction of two new mixed events.

The pair had been racing together earlier in 2026, appearing in the Under 19 women's pair at the European Rowing Under 19 Championships in Brandenburg, Germany, per World Rowing's own record of that regatta. Partnership continuity is the quiet variable in pair rowing. Crews are frequently reshuffled at junior level for squad reasons; the ones that are left alone for a full season tend to be the ones that produce times like this.

Italy took three Under 19 world titles at Plovdiv in total — the women's pair, Alizee Ribolzi in the women's single sculls, and, if silver medals are counted alongside, a place on the podium in the inaugural mixed double. For a national junior programme, three golds and a world best time across four days is a strong regatta by any measure, and the pair was the centrepiece of it.

The stroke seat in a coxless pair is the closest thing junior rowing has to a solo decision made on behalf of two people. Everything the boat does over 2,000 metres follows from the rate and the length established in the opening strokes, and a misjudgement is unrecoverable because there is no coxswain to correct it. Martorana set a rhythm that produced the fastest Under 19 women's pair in the history of the boat class.

The same qualification applies here as to any rowing best time: water conditions are not standardised, which is why World Rowing calls these best times rather than records, and Plovdiv is a quick course. It is also worth being precise about credit — a pair record belongs equally to both athletes, and separating the seats is a description of roles, not a ranking of contribution. What the result establishes is that the two of them, together, are the fastest the age group has produced.
