AGUAS ABIERTAS

🇮🇳 Ishank Singh

The crossing

The route runs from Talaimannar on the Sri Lankan side to Arichalmunai, the sandspit near Dhanushkodi at the eastern tip of Tamil Nadu. The Better India, reporting on 4 May 2026, gives the distance as twenty-nine kilometres and the clock as 4am to 1.50pm: nine hours and fifty minutes in the water.

The previous mark stood at ten hours and thirty minutes, set in 2019 by Jay Jashwanth at the age of ten. Ishank was three years younger and forty minutes quicker. The Universal Records Forum recognised him as both the youngest and the fastest swimmer to have made the crossing.

What the water did

The strait is shallow, tidal and busy, and the report describes currents strong enough at points to push him backwards against his own stroke. A support team tracked weather, hydration and fatigue through the day.

He was not alone on the water. The Sri Lankan Navy escorted him for the first fifteen kilometres; the Indian Coast Guard took over for the remainder. That handover is the clearest measure of what the swim was: an international crossing, cleared and shadowed by two states' maritime services, made by a child in Class 3.

The training behind it

The preparation was done at Dhurwa Dam in Ranchi, four to five hours a day, until he could swim for five hours without stopping. His coaches are named as Aman Kumar Jaiswal and Bajrang Kumar.

"His endurance stood out from the start," Jaiswal told The Better India. "He could sustain long distances without fear." His mother, Manisha Sinha, called him a water baby. Ishank's own account of the day was flatter than either: "I was fully prepared to break the record."

A swimmer with nowhere to race

The odd consequence of doing this at seven is that there is almost no competition left to enter. The report notes that most national swimming events in India set a minimum age of about eleven, which leaves him several years short of the ordinary junior ladder.

Open water is where the record fell and open water is where the next target sits: the English Channel is named in the article as a possible objective. His family is from Dhurwa, in Ranchi, Jharkhand; his father, Sunil Kumar Singh, runs an electrical contracting business, and Ishank was a Class 3 pupil at Jawahar Vidya Mandir when the swim was reported.

What is documented — and what is not

Firm: the date, the route, the distance, the start and finish times, the duration, the previous record and its holder, the recognition by the Universal Records Forum, the two naval escorts, the coaches and the training regime. For a record claim, that is an unusually complete account, and the escort by two states' services is corroboration of a kind that a certificate alone does not give.

Not documented here: the swim has been reported by one outlet in the record gathered for this page, and no independent observer's log, timing sheet or federation ratification has been seen. Nothing has been published since 4 May 2026, so any statement about a Channel attempt would be speculation. The record is the swim, not what follows it.
