A family qualification

The detail Hirsch volunteered to the show is the one that gives the run its shape: his father had been a contestant on Jeopardy! during the 1980s, early in Trebek's tenure. Very few families produce two contestants on the same programme four decades apart, because the qualification is an open test rather than an inheritance.

“Jeopardy! has always been the goal in like all of my trivia pursuits,” he said after his fifth win, which places him in the large group of players who treat the show as the summit of a hobby rather than an accident of casting.

The fifth game, and the method

His fifth victory, reported on 9 July 2024, came against Anna Paone and Kathy Davis. He found both Daily Doubles, answered Final Jeopardy! correctly and finished on $19,601 to Paone's $8,599 and Davis's $3,800. That win took his total to $120,187.

He described his approach in terms of nerve rather than knowledge. “The goal coming in was to win one or two games and not embarrass myself. So, this was surprising and welcomed,” he said, adding that “you can get in your own head a lot. So, I’m trying to be like a loose quiz-playing automaton.” The phrase describes the actual skill the show tests: recall under a buzzer, without deliberation.

Nine wins, then the tournaments

Wikipedia's list of Jeopardy! contestants records the completed streak at nine games, ended by Jay Fisher. Five wins alone are enough to qualify for the Tournament of Champions, where the show said he would meet the season 40 champions Drew Basile, Adriana Harmeyer, Amy Hummel and Alison Betts.

The record compiled for this page adds two later results drawn from Wikipedia's tournament pages: co-runner-up in the 2025 Tournament of Champions and fourth in Jeopardy! Masters in 2025. Both postdate the J!Buzz report cited here, which is why they are attributed rather than presented as the show's own account.

What the numbers say about the field

Jeopardy! produces hundreds of one-day winners a year and a handful of champions who last a week or more. Nine wins puts a player into the group the show invites back, and reaching the final stages of both the Tournament of Champions and Masters puts him in a much smaller group again: the players who beat champions rather than challengers.

Masters in particular is a closed field of six, assembled from the show's most successful recent players, which makes a fourth-place finish there a result against opposition that is nothing like a normal weeknight's.
