Three certifications at fourteen

The Better India reported in April 2018 that Tapadia, a pupil at Loyola High School in Pune, had at fourteen become the youngest person in the world to pass three Microsoft professional certifications: the MCDBA for database administrators, the MCSD for solution developers and the MCSE for systems engineers. These are credentials written for working professionals and normally taken by engineering graduates.

Microsoft noticed. Bill Gates sent him a handwritten congratulatory note, which the article records without printing its text. The article traces the interest further back, to origami at the age of six, a hobby his parents encouraged with books and competitions. The certification year is not given in the piece; the 2018 date belongs to the article, not to the exams.

A company in Class 10

While still in Class 10, around fourteen or fifteen, Tapadia founded Techno Karma Labs, working on high-performance computing and wireless mesh networks. Its first product was a mesh router built on the 802.11b standard, designed to be cheap and efficient.

Mesh networking was a live problem at the time. Rather than routing every packet back to a central access point, mesh nodes relay traffic between themselves, which makes coverage cheap to extend and removes the single point of failure, and it was seen as a route to connectivity in places without wired infrastructure. The Better India records that the venture took a back seat as his education continued, which is the usual fate of a company founded at fifteen.

Master's without a bachelor's

The International Institute of Information Technology in Pune then made him an unusual offer: skip the bachelor's degree and enter the master's programme directly. He took it, and finished second in his batch, competing against students who had spent three or four years on an undergraduate degree he had never sat.

He published research papers during the course and met Irwin Jacobs, a co-founder and former chief executive of Qualcomm, at a conference. At nineteen he interned at Qualcomm in San Diego and stayed about a year, then enrolled in a doctoral programme at the University of California while consulting for product start-ups. The Better India does not name the campus or say whether the doctorate was completed.

TouchMagix

Tapadia returned to India and founded TouchMagix, a company whose technology turns walls and floors into interactive touch surfaces using gesture recognition and multi-touch sensing. The article presents it as the realisation of an idea he had had as a teenager, and describes the business in the language of brand experience: engaging consumers to create memorable moments.

The product category is a real one. Projection-plus-camera systems that make a floor respond to footsteps are now standard in shopping centres, museums and children's play spaces, and the engineering problem is not the projector but the tracking: recognising many simultaneous contacts, in daylight, on an uneven surface, cheaply enough to install at scale.
