🇺🇸 Akilah Johnson

What the drawing contains

The 2016 theme asked entrants to finish the sentence “What makes me…me”. Johnson answered with a self-portrait crowded with symbols. The figure wears box braids. Worked into and around it are an ankh, the outline of the African continent, the Eye of Horus, the word power, a woman's raised fist, the flag of the District of Columbia, and imagery drawn from the Black Lives Matter movement.

The materials were ordinary: coloured pencils, black crayons and Sharpie markers. The work took roughly two weeks. What she said about it was addressed to the people who would see it rather than to the judges. “I hope they feel inspired and try to understand the picture as I want them to understand it,” she said.

The size of the field

About 100,000 students entered the contest that year. From those entries, 53 state and territory champions were selected, and Johnson was chosen the national winner among them.

The District of Columbia had only become eligible for the contest that year, which makes her the first winner it produced. The distinction is small in the way records of this kind usually are, and large in the way that matters to a city whose public schools rarely appear in national prize lists.

Who taught her

The Washington Post's account credits two teachers at Eastern Senior High School. A teacher named Baba Camera shaped the perspective the drawing argues from. Her art teacher, Zalika Perkins, encouraged her to enter.

That detail is worth keeping, because contest coverage tends to present a winning child as a spontaneous event. The record here says something more mundane and more useful: an art teacher in a public high school pointed a student at a deadline, and a second teacher had already given her a subject.

What the win carried

Johnson received a $30,000 college scholarship. Eastern Senior High School received a $50,000 Google for Education grant, directed at a computer lab or technology programme. The prize also included meetings with professional artists at Google's headquarters, and the doodle itself ran on the company's homepage.

As with every year of the contest, the money attached to the school is larger than the money attached to the artist. A drawing made with crayons and marker pens in Northeast Washington paid for equipment in the building where it was made.

What is documented — and what is not

The Washington Post is firm on the school, the grade, the city, the materials, the working time, the symbols in the drawing, the size of the field, the prize and the two teachers. Those are the facts this page states.

It gives no age and no year of birth, names no member of her family, and was written on the day the doodle ran. Nothing in the sources gathered here describes what Johnson has done since 2016 or whether she went on to study art. Where a page of this kind would carry a present-day paragraph, this one carries a gap, and the gap is left visible.
