CLEAN ENERGY

🇸🇦 Abdullah Al-Ghamdi

Hydrogen is easy to make and hard to keep. At 17 he went after the second half of the problem.

A $50,000 Regeneron Young Scientist Award at the 2022 International Science and Engineering Fair in Atlanta.

Abdullah Al-Ghamdi, 17, of Dammam, Saudi Arabia, won a $50,000 Regeneron Young Scientist Award at ISEF 2022. His project modified a metal-organic material so that it could extract hydrogen from water and hold it safely for clean energy production. It was one of the fair's three largest individual awards that year, and the organiser's announcement is the documented record.

The award

Two Regeneron Young Scientist Awards of $50,000 each were given at ISEF 2022, one rung below the $75,000 George D. Yancopoulos Innovator Award. Al-Ghamdi took one; Rishab Jain of Portland, Oregon, took the other. The Society for Science named them at the fair held in Atlanta on 12 and 13 May 2022.

The organiser describes his project as a modified metal-organic material for hydrogen extraction from water and safe storage for clean energy production. No further technical specification — uptake figures, pressure and temperature conditions, or the identity of the framework — is published in that announcement.

Why hydrogen storage is the bottleneck

Hydrogen burns clean and carries a great deal of energy for its weight. The difficulty has never been making it; the difficulty is holding it. As a gas it occupies an inconvenient volume, and compressing or liquefying it costs energy and demands tanks built for high pressure or deep cold.

Metal-organic materials offer a third route. They are crystalline structures full of pores, engineered so that gas molecules settle inside the lattice and can be released again on demand. The research question is always the same: how much can be stored, under what conditions, and how many cycles the material survives. A student project that modifies such a material to improve both extraction and storage is working on precisely the step that keeps hydrogen out of ordinary use.

Where the project came from

Al-Ghamdi competed from Dammam, on Saudi Arabia's Gulf coast and at the centre of the country's oil industry. Clean-energy chemistry carries a particular weight in that setting, where hydrogen is discussed as an export as much as a fuel.

The fair itself is assembled from affiliated competitions worldwide, so an international finalist has already come through a national selection before arriving. Saudi entrants reach ISEF through that route rather than by direct application, which is why an award at this level represents two separate contests won.

The 2022 fair

Regeneron ISEF 2022 was held at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta and brought together 1,750 finalists from 49 US states and 63 countries, regions and territories, competing for nearly $8 million in awards.

The top prize, $75,000, went to Robert Sansone of Fort Pierce, Florida, for a magnet-free electric motor. Amon Schumann of Berlin took the $10,000 innovation award for solar-powered balloon probes, and Anika Puri of New York took the $10,000 science communication award for drone-video software that detects elephant poachers. Maya Ajmera, the Society's chief executive, said every finalist that year had "shown true dedication, passion, and grit."

What is documented — and what is not

Documented: the award, the amount, his age, his home city and a one-sentence account of the chemistry, published by the organisation that ran the fair.

Not documented here: his school, his university, any publication or patent arising from the work, or what he has done since May 2022. His is also a common name, which makes online searches unreliable; this page records only what the cited source states about the ISEF finalist from Dammam.

Questions people ask about Abdullah Al-Ghamdi

What did Abdullah Al-Ghamdi win?

A Regeneron Young Scientist Award worth $50,000 at ISEF 2022, one of the fair's three largest individual prizes that year.

What was his project?

A modified metal-organic material designed to extract hydrogen from water and store it safely for clean energy production.

How old was he?

Seventeen at the time of the award, according to the Society for Science. No date of birth is published in these sources.

Where is he from?

Dammam, Saudi Arabia, as listed by the fair organisers.

Why is hydrogen storage difficult?

Hydrogen is light and energy-dense but occupies a large volume as a gas; compressing or liquefying it is costly, which is why porous storage materials are studied.

Where is Abdullah Al-Ghamdi now?

No source in this record states his current studies or work.

Is he on Wikipedia?

No Wikipedia article was found. The Society for Science press release is the strongest available source, and the name is common enough that other results may refer to different people.

How large was ISEF 2022?

1,750 finalists from 49 US states and 63 countries, regions and territories, with nearly $8 million in awards.
