🇺🇸 Victor Cai

Second on the 2022 list

Society for Science publishes a ranked top ten for each year's Science Talent Search, and the 2022 list runs: Christine Ye, Victor Cai, Amber Luo, Daniel Larsen, Neil Chowdhury, Aseel Rawashdeh, Pravalika Gayatri Putalapattu, Neil Rathi, Amara Orth, Luke Robitaille. Cai is second.

That is the whole of the public claim, and the page is unusually spare. It records that forty finalists competed and that students won $1.8 million between them, and it points readers to a finalist book and a press release for the project descriptions rather than carrying them. For a reader arriving at the name Victor Cai, the result is a ranking without a subject.

What second place normally carries

The prize structure is public even where the individual figure is not. The Society's finalist page for 2020, two years earlier, sets out the ladder plainly: first place $250,000, second $175,000, third $150,000, then $100,000, $90,000, $80,000, $70,000, $60,000, $50,000 and $40,000 for tenth. Every one of the forty finalists received a minimum of $25,000 simply for being selected.

Those sums put the competition in a different category from a school science fair. A second place is a sum comparable to four years of private university tuition, awarded on the strength of an independent research project completed before the age of eighteen. The 2022 page states only the aggregate, $1.8 million, and does not confirm that the 2020 ladder applied unchanged.

How the search selects

The Science Talent Search asks for a body of original research, not an experiment. Entrants submit a full research report along with their academic record; a first cut produces three hundred scholars, from whom forty finalists are chosen and flown to Washington. There they are interviewed by panels of scientists who probe not just the result but whether the student understands the field around it.

The scale of the filter is visible in the 2020 figures, the most recent the Society published in the pages used here: forty finalists out of 1,993 entrants. Society for Science, the same Washington non-profit, has also run the International Science and Engineering Fair for more than seventy years, so the two great American youth science competitions share an organiser and a judging philosophy.

The gap in the record

Second place in the Science Talent Search is the kind of result that usually generates a local newspaper story, a school district announcement and a paragraph in a university admissions profile. For Cai, none of that reached the sources used for this page. The Society's own top-ten listing gives a rank and a name, and nothing further was confirmed.

The name is also common, which compounds the problem: searching for it returns several unrelated people, and this page will not attach any of them to the 2022 result. What can be said with confidence is the placing, the year, the competition, and the size of the field. What cannot be said is what he researched, where he went to school, how old he was, or where he went next.

What is documented, and what is not

Firm: Victor Cai placed second in the 2022 Regeneron Science Talent Search; the Society for Science top ten for that year names him in that position; forty finalists competed and $1.8 million was awarded across the competition.

Not documented, in the sources used here: the title or subject of his research, his school, his home town, his age or birth year, the precise prize he received, and anything about his studies or work since March 2022. A ranked list is a strong, checkable fact. It is also, on its own, a thin biography, and this page says so rather than filling the space.
