The project

Intel's announcement describes the work in unusually technical terms for a press release: Raoof applied mathematical knot theory and Alexander-Conway polynomial invariants to biochemical problems, focusing on molecular structural classification.

Knot theory is the branch of topology that studies closed loops in space and asks when two of them are genuinely different. A polynomial invariant is the tool that answers the question: a formula that assigns a value to a knot which does not change when the loop is bent or twisted, only when it is genuinely retied. Applying that machinery to molecules means treating a molecular chain as a loop and classifying it by its topology rather than its chemistry.

Why the crossover matters

Long molecules do tangle, and the tangles are functional. The idea of describing them with the same invariants mathematicians use for abstract knots is an established research direction, and the striking thing about Raoof's entry is that a seventeen-year-old was working in it.

The source used here states the subject and the tools but not the results: it does not say which molecules she classified, how many, or what the classification produced. This page therefore reports the approach and stops there.

Three grand prizes

Intel's release names three grand prize winners at $50,000 each. Alongside Raoof were Natalie Saranga Omattage, 17, of Cleveland, Mississippi, who developed biosensors using quartz crystal microbalance technology to screen for food additive contaminants, and Yi-Han Su, 17, of Chinese Taipei, who identified high-activity catalysts for methanol reforming to generate hydrogen.

Pure mathematics applied to chemistry, analytical instrumentation and catalysis: three projects with nothing in common except that a panel of judges ranked them at the top of the same fair.

The fair in 2008

Intel ISEF 2008 was held in Atlanta and drew more than 1,550 young scientists from 51 countries, regions and territories. Beyond the grand prizes, the fair gave out 18 Best of Category awards of $5,000 and a laptop each, and more than 500 participants took away scholarships and prizes of some kind.

Craig Barrett, Intel's chairman, framed the week around the idea that "dedication to science inquiry can transcend boundaries and show what we can accomplish when we focus on education and science."

What is documented — and what is not

The press release gives her name, age, home town, prize and a precise description of her approach. It does not name her school, her mentor, or any university department that hosted the work.

It also stops in May 2008. No source used here reports where Raoof studied afterwards, whether the knot theory work was published, or what she does now. Her birth year is inferred from being 17 that May and could be 1990 or 1991.

How the fair selects

Intel ISEF finalists do not enter directly. Each qualifies by winning an affiliated regional, state or national fair, of which there are several hundred worldwide, and the international finalists arrive having already beaten a local field.

That structure is what gives a grand prize its weight. It is not a prize for the best project submitted by post, but the top of a season-long elimination that runs from school gymnasiums up to a convention centre floor holding fifteen hundred exhibits.
