SPELLING BEE

🇺🇸 Rohan Rajeev

Second in the country

The Scripps National Spelling Bee ends as a duel. Once the field has been cut to two, the spellers alternate, and the contest continues until one of them misses a word that the other then spells correctly, followed by a championship word. Rajeev was one of the two in 2017. He went out on marram, the grass planted across coastal dunes to hold the sand together, and Ananya Vinay took the title.

The Associated Press report of that final describes Vinay as unflappable, a word that in the bee's context is high praise: the format is engineered to shake composure, and the champion is usually the competitor who least appears to be thinking about the stakes. Rajeev's own performance is what forced the duel to last as long as it did.

What second place costs

There is no consolation in this competition's structure. A speller who reaches the final two has out-lasted every other child in a national field, and the record still shows a single missed word. The gap between the champion and the runner-up is, in raw terms, one item of vocabulary on one evening.

The coverage reflects that asymmetry. The champion is interviewed, photographed and quoted for weeks; the runner-up appears in one paragraph of the wire report, usually as the name attached to the word that ended it. Rajeev's case is a clean example. The word marram is easy to find. Almost nothing else about him is.

The bee he nearly won

The competition Rajeev reached the final of had spent the preceding years struggling to produce a single winner at all. In 2014 it ended in a shared title, the first in 52 years, after Sriram Hathwar of Painted Post, New York, and Ansun Sujoe of Fort Worth, Texas, both stumbled in the same round and then exhausted the list of championship words between them. Hathwar finished on stichomythia, Sujoe on feuilleton.

The scale of the thing has grown with its television profile. In 2009 the bee drew what was then a record 293 spellers, and the champion, 13-year-old Kavya Shivashankar of Olathe, Kansas, took more than $40,000 in cash and prizes for spelling Laodicean. The 2017 final that Rajeev reached ended with one champion, not two.

That is the institution: a national field, a televised final, a prize large enough to matter, and a format that resolves the whole year into a single word for whoever comes second.

Why this page is short on him

The Associated Press report of the 2017 final, which is the source named for Rajeev in this project's research file, could not be retrieved when this page was written: the publisher's site refused the request. What appears above about his hometown, his placing and his final word is the headline-level record carried in that file.

The honest consequence is that this page cannot state his age in 2017, his school, his grade, how many times he had competed before, how many rounds the final duel ran, which words he spelled correctly on the way, or what he has done since. Those facts exist in contemporaneous coverage. They are not in front of this editor, and inventing them would be worse than leaving the gap visible.

What is documented, and what is not

Firm: Rajeev is from Edmond, Oklahoma; he finished runner-up at the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee; he was eliminated on marram; the champion that year was Ananya Vinay, whom the Associated Press described as unflappable.

Not documented here: his age and birth year, his school and grade, his family, his earlier appearances at the bee, the length and detail of the 2017 final, and everything about his life since. No claim about any of those appears on this page, and none should be inferred from its silence.
