The Brussels prize
The 28th European Union Contest for Young Scientists ran from 15 to 20 September 2016 at the Tour & Taxis Sheds in Brussels. Close to 140 young scientists aged between 14 and 21 presented 80 projects from 37 countries to an international jury.
Three projects shared the first prize of 7,000 euros each. One was a mathematics entry from Norway by Ane Espeseth and Torstein Vik, one a computing project from Italy by Valerio Pagliarino, and the third was Grace's biology entry for the United States.
The project
The project's title is a paragraph in itself: Shining a Light on the Blind: Evolutionary Regression and Adaptive Progression in the Micro-vertebrate Ramphotyphlops braminus, a Model for Understanding Brain Organization and Complex Neurological Disorders.
What the title claims is a chain of reasoning rather than a single observation. An animal that has lost one sense over evolutionary time carries traces of that loss in how its nervous system is organised, and Grace proposed that organisation as a model for studying complex neurological disorders. Best of Category at Intel ISEF
The International Science and Engineering Fair was held from 8 to 13 May 2016 at the Phoenix Convention Center in Arizona. Society for Science records approximately 1,750 young scientists selected from 419 affiliate fairs in more than 75 countries, regions and territories, with roughly 600 finalists receiving awards.
Grace, from Melbourne, Florida, won the Best of Category award in Animal Sciences, an award worth $5,000. The fair's top prizes that year went to Han Jie Wang of Vancouver, who received the Gordon E. Two competitions, two different tests
The European contest, established in 1989, exists to promote cooperation between young scientists and to steer them towards careers in science and technology. It takes national winners and judges them against each other, which is why its first prizes are shared across disciplines rather than ranked.
Intel ISEF works the other way, building from hundreds of affiliate fairs into a single week of judging with category awards across every field. Winning at both in one year means passing two quite different selection systems, one national and European, the other American and pyramidal.
