The result
The competition is two papers on consecutive mornings, three problems each, four and a half hours apiece. Every problem is marked out of seven by coordinators working through the written proof line by line. The official 2022 table records Ngo at 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7: total 42, rank 1, gold.
Because the maximum cannot be exceeded, all ten contestants who reached it in Oslo share first place. The others were six from China, Yuya Oki of Japan, Ihor Pylaiev of Ukraine, and Galiia Sharafetdinova, whose entry carries no country.
The name, and how to read it

Vietnam at the olympiad
Vietnamese teams are built through a national olympiad system that selects and trains a squad before the six places are fixed, and the country has produced gold medallists repeatedly over decades. A maximum score is the rarest result that system can deliver, and in 2022 it delivered one.

Why ten was unusual
Ten perfect papers in a single year is the highest figure in this file. The 2019 olympiad produced six, the 2023 olympiad five, the 2026 olympiad seven, and the 2024 olympiad exactly one. The variation is a property of the paper, not of the contestants: the problem selection committee tunes difficulty, and the top of the table moves with it.
The medal structure stays fixed regardless. At most half the field receives a medal, in a ratio of roughly one gold to two silvers to three bronzes, which keeps gold at about one contestant in twelve however the scores fall.
