🇺🇸 Nettie Crawford

Both finalists missed the same word, and the judges called the national bee a draw

Co-champion, National Spelling Bee, June 1962, on esquamulose

The 1962 National Spelling Bee ended without a single winner. Both finalists missed the word esquamulose, and after the exchange the judges declared the national title shared between them. Nettie Crawford, 13, of Roswell, New Mexico, was one of the two. The competition would not produce another tie for fifty-two years.

How a bee is called a draw

The bee resolves by elimination: when one finalist misses, the other has to spell the missed word and then one further word to take the title outright. When both fail, the contest returns to where it started, and in 1962 it did so on esquamulose - a botanical adjective meaning without scales.

The Associated Press report was headlined simply: the spelling bee was called a draw. The Spokane Daily Chronicle, writing before the finish, had described the final as a girl and a boy competing in a spelldown finale. It ended with both of them holding the title.

Who she was

Crawford was 13 and came from Roswell, New Mexico. Her place in Washington was paid for by the El Paso Herald-Post, one of the newspapers that sponsored regional bees and sent their champions on - an arrangement that routinely carried spellers across state lines to the nearest sponsoring paper.

The sources used here name her, her age, her town and her sponsor. They do not name her co-champion, describing him only as the boy in the final, and this page does not supply a name the record in front of it does not carry.

Fifty-two years without another tie

The 1962 result stood alone for half a century. The bee did not produce another shared title until 2014, after which co-champions became briefly common, a run that ended with the 2019 final in which eight spellers shared the trophy.

The reason ties are rare is arithmetic. For a draw, two finalists have to fail on the same word in the same exchange, which requires a word that defeats both at exactly the same moment. Word lists are written to avoid that, and in 1962 the writing failed.

The shared title also complicated the record keeping. Compilations of bee champions list two names for 1962 and, in the decades since, some have listed only one, which is how a co-champion quietly disappears from a list. Crawford's name is in the contemporary wire coverage, dated and specific, and that is the version this page follows.

The word

Esquamulose is about as obscure as English gets. It is formed from Latin squama, a scale, with the negative prefix and an adjectival ending: literally, not covered in small scales. A speller who knows the root can build it; a speller who does not has nothing to work from.

That is the kind of word a bee reaches when the list is running out. It is also the kind of word that produces a draw rather than a champion, because it offers the same wall to everyone standing.

What is documented, and what is not

Documented: the shared 1962 title, the word esquamulose, her age of 13, Roswell, New Mexico, and the El Paso Herald-Post sponsorship.

Not documented in the sources used here: the name of her co-champion, the number of rounds, the prize arrangements, her school and family, and anything about her life after June 1962. This page records what the two contemporary reports establish and nothing further.
