SPELLING BEE

🇺🇸 Laurel Kuykendall

Therapy, 1940

The winning word was therapy, which in 1940 belonged mainly to medicine and has since become one of the most ordinary words in the language. The wire reports put the result out at the end of May, and the Spokesman-Review in Spokane carried it on 29 May under the headline "Farm Girl Tops in Spelling Bee".

The St. Petersburg Times reported the result the following day, and in July the Milwaukee Journal ran a longer piece under the headline "Spelling Champion Is Girl of 14 From Tennessee's Hills". The framing was consistent across the country: the story was the origin as much as the achievement.

Pippin, near Cookeville

Kuykendall came from Pippin, a community near Cookeville in the Upper Cumberland region of Tennessee. In 1940 that meant a farm, a rural school and a long way to Washington.

The bee had been running since 1925, and the papers of the period liked its capacity to produce champions from places that rarely appeared in national coverage. The competition asked for nothing except a dictionary and the discipline to work through it, which made it one of the few national contests genuinely open to a child on a farm.

Five hundred dollars

The prize was 500 dollars. In 1940 that was a serious amount of money for a farming family, and the newspapers reported it as one of the central facts of the story rather than as a footnote.

The bee's prize has grown with the century, reaching 50,000 dollars by 2019, but the structure has not changed: a single lump sum, awarded to a child, reported alongside the winning word.

The competition was then in its fifteenth year. It would be suspended during the Second World War and resume afterwards, which makes the 1940 champion one of the last of the bee's pre-war winners.

The pronouncer's mistake

One incident from the 1940 competition survives in the record. The pronouncer, whose job is to say words and never to spell them, accidentally spelled fore aloud during the bee.

It is a small thing that illuminates the format. Every word spoken from the stage is evidence, and a pronouncer who lets four letters slip has handed a competitor something they were not supposed to have. The modern bee guards against exactly this, with scripted definitions and etymologies and a pronouncer who reads rather than improvises.

What is known about Laurel Kuykendall since

Almost nothing, in the material available for this page. The contemporary reports from 1940 document the win, the prize and her origins. A photograph of the moment was later published by the archive site Shorpy, in March 2011, under the caption "And the Winner Is".

Her later life, her married name if she took one, her career and her death are not established in these sources. This is the ordinary condition of champions from the bee's first decades: a week of national coverage, a photograph, and then a private life that the newspapers never followed up.
