Forty-three thousand digits

The scale is hard to hold in mind. Forty-three thousand digits is a string longer than this entire page repeated many times over, containing no words, no grammar and no meaning: nothing that would let a reciter recover a lost place by working out what ought to come next.

Five hours and twenty-one minutes of continuous recall is also an endurance event. Concentration has to survive fatigue, thirst and the presence of witnesses, and the only permitted outcome is a perfect sequence from the first digit to the last. A lapse at digit forty-two thousand costs the same as a lapse at digit ten.

How it is done

Reciters break the expansion into blocks — typically groups of ten or twenty digits — and encode each block as an image, a word or a sound, then place those images along a remembered route. Recall becomes a walk rather than a recitation.

The training is arithmetic in reverse: months of adding blocks, rehearsing joins between them, and testing the whole chain repeatedly. A memoriser is not straining at the moment of the attempt. The work happened over the preceding year.

The ranking list

Pi recitation has no governing body, so the Pi World Ranking List serves as the register: a single public table of who recited how many digits, when, and in what time. Chahal appears on it with his 43,000-digit run of 19 June 2006 and the label of Indian record holder.

A central list matters more here than in most disciplines. Pi is public and infinite, so any claim can in principle be checked digit by digit against the published expansion — but only if someone has recorded the claim in the first place, with a date, a digit count and a duration attached to it.

With pi in mind

In March 2017, around Pi Day, DNA India published a piece on pi memorisers under the headline With Pi in MIND. The date is not a coincidence: the discipline gets its annual hearing on 14 March, and most of what is written about its practitioners is written in that week.

India has a long association with the constant and with competitive memorisation, and Chahal's run sits within that tradition rather than as an isolated curiosity. The coverage tends to arrive once a year and then subside, which is one reason the ranking list rather than the press is the durable record.

Documented: 43,000 digits, recited on 19 June 2006, in five hours and twenty-one minutes, listed as an Indian record.

Not documented in these sources: his age, his birth year, his home town, his occupation, the venue and witnesses for the attempt, how long he trained and whether he has attempted the record again. The ranking list carries the numbers and the date; it carries nothing else, and this page does not add to it.
