EARLY COLLEGE

🇺🇸 Khaya Njumbe

He started college at eleven and finished at fifteen, and insists he is not a prodigy.

The first in his family to graduate college, from Gary, Indiana, with medical school waiting until he turns eighteen.

Khaya Njumbe of Gary, Indiana, began taking university classes at 11 while attending a charter high school on dual credit. In May 2024, at 15, he was set to become the youngest known college graduate in the state's history, finishing at Indiana University Northwest. The child of immigrants, he is the first in his family to graduate from college, and he wants to be an orthopaedic surgeon.

Four years of two schools at once

The route was dual credit, the American arrangement that lets a secondary-school student take university courses that count towards both qualifications. Njumbe enrolled in his first at 11, while attending 21st Century Charter High School, and kept going until the degree was finished.

By May 2024 the university expected him to become the youngest known college graduate in Indiana, at 15. The phrase used by the institution is careful and worth preserving: youngest known. No agency audits the ages of American graduates, so such records are claims made by the institutions that hold the files, which is as close to authoritative as the category gets.

What he taught himself

The acceleration was largely self-directed. At seven he taught himself the piano and Mandarin Chinese, and he memorised the periodic table. His explanation is a statement of appetite rather than of ability: “I always want to try new things, do what other people aren’t doing.”

His professor at Indiana University Northwest, Jack Bloom, described the effect in the classroom in terms any teacher would recognise. A serious student who asks good questions, Bloom said, and who helps the class. That is a different kind of praise from the usual language about young graduates, because it describes what he contributed to the room rather than how quickly he moved through it.

The claim he refuses

Njumbe has been unusually direct in rejecting the framing that normally accompanies these stories. “I just want to show other kids that they can do it too,” he said. “I’m not an anomaly, no type of genius or prodigy. I just worked hard.”

Whether that is literally true is beside the point of why he says it. A story about a genius is a story about someone else, and it lets every reader off. A story about work is a claim that the route is available, which for a first-generation student from Gary, a city with a long and difficult industrial history, is the argument he evidently wants made. His own summary of his childhood was that he had a lot of ambition and was always an overachiever at school.

Where Khaya Njumbe is now

The plan set out in 2024 was a master's degree first, because medical schools in the United States do not enrol students under 18, and then medical school, with orthopaedic surgery as the eventual goal.

That constraint is the practical shape of his next few years. The sources used here do not record which master's programme he entered, or whether he has since applied to medical school, and no date of birth is published. What is documented is the sequence up to May 2024 and the stated intention after it.

Why the last four years are the hard ones

Early graduation is a problem of admissions until it becomes a problem of waiting. A fifteen-year-old can be admitted to university early, can outperform older classmates and can finish a degree; what cannot be accelerated is the age bar on professional training. Medicine in particular is built around apprenticeship with real patients, and no institution will place a minor on a ward.

That is why his plan includes a master's degree that is, in part, a holding pattern. It is also why so few early graduates end up in medicine: the gap between finishing a degree and being old enough for the next stage is long enough for most people's plans to change. What his record establishes is that at 15 he had already done the part that can be accelerated, and had a clear account of what the rest would require.
