The 2024 standings

Aaryan Shukla of India won the combination with 819.84 points, repeating his 2022 victory and setting the highest winning total since 2012. Kaloyan Geshev of Bulgaria was second on 532.86. Chiba was third on 455.75.

The gap at the top was extraordinary: Shukla scored more than the next two competitors' totals separated. Against that, a podium finish was the best available result for everyone else in the hall, and Chiba took it.

The addition round

Addition at the World Cup means summing ten-digit numbers under time pressure, in rounds scored on correct answers. Chiba's two rounds produced 11 and 20 points. The second of those, as World Mental Calculation put it, was twenty questions solved with zero errors.

The two sources differ on where that placed him. The competition's official results table ranks him fourth in the addition discipline; World Mental Calculation's report of the same event says he placed third in it. This page records both rather than choosing, because the discrepancy is in the published record and not in the arithmetic.

Across the other events

Chiba was third in multiplication of eight-digit numbers, with 7 and 15 across the two rounds, and fourth in square roots of six-digit numbers with 8 and 20. He was third in the surprise tasks, scored as Most Versatile Calculator, with 282.39 points, and eighteenth in calendar calculations with 13 and 20.

That is the shape of a strong all-round competitor with one weak discipline. The combined title rewards exactly this breadth, and third place overall came from placing near the top of four events rather than winning any of them.

What the tenth World Cup involved

Nine events were contested: the four standard disciplines of calendar calculation, addition, multiplication and square roots, plus five surprise challenges that were not published in advance and required improvisation. Those included fractions, roots and powers, and other composite arithmetic.

Several world records fell that weekend. Shukla set a new mark for addition, ten ten-digit problems in 78.08 seconds, and another for square roots at 33.78 seconds; Geshev improved his own division record to 32.38 seconds. The competition is small, thirty-five people from sixteen countries, but the records it produces are the sport's official ones.
