The golden buzzer

Series thirteen of Britain's Got Talent ran its auditions on ITV from 6 April to 25 May 2019. Five acts were sent straight to the live shows by golden buzzer: the 13-year-old dancer Akshat Singh, the band Chapter 13, aged 14 to 15, the 39-year-old stand-up comedian Kojo Anim, the choir Flakefleet Primary School, aged 4 to 11, and Borg, entered as a ten-year-old singer.

The series records do not state which judge pressed hers. The panel was David Walliams, Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and Simon Cowell, with Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly presenting on ITV and a companion show on ITV2.

The semi-final

Five semi-finals were staged between 27 and 31 May 2019. Borg performed in the second, broadcast on 28 May to 7.64 million viewers, with a further 6.12 million watching the results. She took 11.3 percent of the vote and finished fifth on the night, outside the qualifying places, and was eliminated.

A Britain's Got Talent semi-final sends through the leader of the public vote and one further act, chosen by the judges from those immediately behind. Fifth place on 11.3 percent put her outside both routes, three days after the last audition show of the series had aired.

The final she did not reach

The series thirteen final was broadcast on 2 June 2019 to 9.73 million viewers. Colin Thackery, an 89-year-old singer, won it with 25.3 percent, ahead of the mentalist X on 17.8 and the magician Ben Hart on 10.2. Kojo Anim finished fourth on 9.6 percent and Flakefleet Primary School sixth on 8.8.

That is the useful comparison. Of the five golden buzzer acts in 2019, only two reached the final, and neither of those won. Akshat Singh, Chapter 13 and Giorgia Borg did not get there at all. The buzzer bought each of them a place in the live shows and nothing beyond it.

Ten years old on a national final stage

Age was the story of that series from both ends. The winner was 89. Borg was ten. Flakefleet Primary School put children as young as four in the final, and the contemporary dance duo Libby and Charlie, both eleven, finished tenth. The competition sets a primary-school singer against a career club comedian and a pensioner with a following, and settles it on a single public vote.

What a golden buzzer does for a ten-year-old is compress the timetable: no second audition, no waiting to be recalled, straight into a live ITV broadcast in front of more than seven million people. What it cannot do is transfer any of its momentum to the vote, which is the point at which the show stops being a judges' show and becomes an audience one.

What is documented — and what is not

Firm: her age of ten, her act as a singer, the golden buzzer in series thirteen, and 11.3 percent for fifth place and elimination in the second semi-final on 28 May 2019.

Not documented in the sources gathered here: her nationality, her home town, her school, her family, the songs she sang, which judge pressed the buzzer, and anything about her after May 2019. The country field on this page follows the show she appeared on rather than any statement in a source, and the research note behind the record flags exactly that. There is no Wikipedia article in her own name.
