🇺🇸 Emma Boettcher

What happened

Holzhauer's run in the spring of 2019 was the biggest story Jeopardy! had produced in fifteen years. A professional sports bettor, he had built a strategy around hunting the Daily Doubles and wagering enormous sums on them, rewriting the single-game record repeatedly and putting himself within sight of Ken Jennings's all-time earnings total.

The game that stopped him aired on 3 June 2019. Jeopardy!'s account of it is that Boettcher matched his strategy: she found both Daily Doubles in the second round, denying him the instrument the streak was built on, and took the lead into Final Jeopardy!. The show calls her the giant-slayer.

Three games

Beating a 32-time champion is not the same as being a champion, and Boettcher became one on her own account: she won three games in total before her run ended in June 2019.

That figure is worth stating plainly because the story is usually told as a single night. Three consecutive wins is an ordinary but real achievement on a show where the median champion wins once or twice, and it demonstrates that the game against Holzhauer was not an accident of scheduling.

Who she was

The detail that made the story irresistible to newspapers is not on the show's own pages. Boettcher is widely reported, on the basis of Wikipedia's list of Jeopardy! contestants, as a 27-year-old librarian at the University of Chicago at the time of the game, whose master's work had concerned the wording of Jeopardy! clues.

None of that appears on the two Jeopardy.com pages used for this record, which state her three wins, the 32-game streak she ended, and the tactical outline of the game, and nothing else. The age and occupation on this page are therefore secondary, and the birth year is derived from a reported age rather than from a published date of birth.

What is documented, and what is not

Firm: that she defeated James Holzhauer and ended his 32-game streak, reported by Jeopardy! on 3 June 2019; that she did so by finding both Daily Doubles in the second round and leading into Final Jeopardy!; and that she won three games in total.

Not documented on the pages used here: the final scores, the Final Jeopardy! clue and category, her age, her occupation and employer, her home city, and any direct quotation from her or from Holzhauer. The video in which she gives her own account exists on the show's site but could not be read for this page.

Why the manner of it mattered

Streaks on Jeopardy! usually end quietly. A champion misses a buzz, wagers badly on the last clue, or simply meets an opponent who happens to know the Final Jeopardy! answer. What made 3 June 2019 different is that Holzhauer's streak was ended by the specific tactic that had built it.

The Daily Doubles are the only clues on the board where a player can wager an unlimited proportion of their score, and Holzhauer's entire method depended on finding them first. Taking both of them in the second round is not luck in the way that a lucky guess is luck: the squares must be hunted deliberately, from the bottom of the board upward, at the cost of a coherent category run. Boettcher played the board the way he did, and it worked once, which was all it needed to do.
