🇺🇸 Diana Reynard

When the list runs out

A bee is designed to end with one speller. It does that by feeding a prepared list of words, hundreds deep, into successive rounds until only one competitor is left standing. In 1950 the two finalists spelled their way to the bottom of that list.

The Associated Press report was headlined on exactly that: having run out of words, the judges awarded two prizes. The final word recorded in the notes of the day was meticulosity. The Sydney Morning Herald carried the story three days later under the same idea - the spelling judges had run out of words.

The photograph that was not taken

With two champions on the stage, the photographers asked for the obvious picture: the pair embracing. Her co-champion, Colquitt Dean, a 14-year-old from College Park, Georgia, declined, saying he was worried about the reaction back home.

It is the detail that survived the competition. A refusal in front of a bank of cameras reads differently seventy-five years on than it did that evening, and the reports of the day recorded it as it happened, without comment.

Twelve years old and from East Cleveland

Reynard was 12 and reached Washington through the Cleveland Press, one of the newspapers that ran regional bees and sent their winners on. East Cleveland in 1950 was a dense, industrial inner suburb, and a child from it sharing a national title was precisely the kind of story its sponsoring paper existed to print.

Her age put her among the youngest in the final rounds. The field then, as now, was weighted towards the oldest eligible competitors, and a 12-year-old outlasting them to the end of the word list was a considerable result.

Nothing else about her preparation is recorded. The sponsoring papers of that era ran study programmes and printed practice lists, and a regional champion typically arrived in Washington having worked through them for a year or more, but no source used here describes what Reynard did or who helped her. The record holds the result and not the route to it.

What the tie started

The 1950 result was the first shared title in the national bee. It happened again in 1962, when two finalists both missed esquamulose, and then not for another fifty-two years. From 2014 co-championships became briefly frequent, ending with the 2019 final in which eight spellers took the trophy together.

The 2019 outcome had the same underlying cause as 1950: the words ran out before the children did. In both cases the competition met spellers better prepared than the list that had been written for them.
