🇦🇺 Byron Waller

Brisbane to Brisbane

The route covered roughly 45,000 kilometres in a Sling TSi, a light two-seat aircraft, with the instructor Paul Denness alongside him. The ABC covered the departure in August 2025, describing a teenage pilot set to fly into the record books, and the completion in October, when he landed having attempted the record for the youngest supported pilot to circumnavigate the world.

A circumnavigation in a light aircraft is a logistics problem as much as a flying one: permits, fuel, weather windows and customs across dozens of jurisdictions. Gulf News covered one leg of it, a 15-year-old landing his own aircraft in the United Arab Emirates.

Patient to Pilot

Waller has Crohn's disease, an inflammatory bowel condition, and made it the public purpose of the flight under the banner Patient to Pilot. Managing a chronic illness across three months of flying, climate change and unfamiliar food supply is a considerable undertaking on its own.

That framing was his and his family's choice, publicly made, and is reported here on that basis. His parents are Jeni Langdon and Rob Waller.

The record, and its asterisk

The ABC reported the record as pending ratification by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale, the body that certifies aviation records. Ratification is a paperwork process that can take months, and until it is complete the claim is an attempt rather than a confirmed record.

The qualifier 'supported' matters too. Waller flew with a qualified instructor aboard, which places the flight in a different category from a solo circumnavigation. It is the category he was attempting, and the coverage was careful about the distinction.

Where Byron Waller is now

This was not his first long flight. In 2024, at 15, he became the youngest pilot to fly around Australia. After the circumnavigation he earned a recreational pilot licence at 16, and in April 2026 The New Daily reported his next objective: a flight to Antarctica.

That progression, around Australia, then around the world, then toward the poles, is the shape of a deliberate flying career rather than a single stunt.

What a teenage circumnavigation actually takes

Long-distance flights by young pilots have a complicated history, and aviation authorities have grown cautious about them for good reason. The risks are real, and the pressure on a young pilot to continue into bad weather rather than abandon a schedule has ended such attempts badly in the past.

The supported category exists precisely to address that. An instructor in the right-hand seat can take control, and the decision to divert or wait does not rest on a teenager's judgement alone. Waller's flight was run that way, which is why the record he was attempting carries the word 'supported' in its name. The aviation achievement is real and the safety architecture around it was deliberate, and both of those facts belong in any honest account of what a 15-year-old did between August and October 2025.
