Thirty-seven out of forty-two

Each of the six olympiad problems is marked out of seven, so 42 is the maximum. Nadig's row reads 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 2. Five complete arguments and partial credit on the last question, which is the position the organisers reserve for a problem most of the field will not finish.

Four contestants finished on 37 in 2023 and shared twelfth place: Nadig, his teammate Arjun Gupta, and two others. Above them were five perfect 42s, taken by Haojia Shi and Chunji Wang of China, Junhwi Bae of South Korea, David-Andrei Anghel of Romania and Derek Liu of the United States, and a short queue of scores in the high thirties.

Two Indians on the same score

India's 2023 results in Chiba ran Arjun Gupta and Nadig on 37 for gold at joint twelfth, Ananda Bhaduri and Siddharth Choppara on 29 for silver at joint eighty-second, and Adhitya Mangudy Venkata Ganesh on 22 for bronze.

Two of those names became the story of the following year. Bhaduri and Ganesh both returned in 2024 at Bath and both converted their medals upward, Ganesh to fifth in the world with 35 points and Bhaduri to fourteenth with 32. Nadig's 2023 gold sat at the top of a squad that was still improving.

The field, and what twelfth means in it

The 64th olympiad drew 618 contestants, each of them the product of a national selection process. India's runs through several rounds of examination and a training camp before six names are chosen, which means the competition to reach Chiba was already severe before any of the six problems were seen.

Gold at the IMO is awarded to approximately the top twelfth of the field, which makes the medal itself a broad category. The precise rank is the part that carries information. Nadig finished twelfth of 618, which places him not merely inside the gold band but within a few marks of the perfect papers at the top of it.

What the table records — and what it does not

The firm facts are the organisers' own: country, six problem scores, total, rank, medal, year and host city. Nothing here is second-hand, and nothing has been reconstructed from a report of the event.

The table is the whole record. It gives no age, no date of birth, no school, no city and no photograph, and nothing in the sources gathered here says how Nadig qualified, what he studied afterwards or whether he returned to the competition. Those absences are stated rather than filled.

Why the sixth problem sets the order

Reading down the 2023 table, a pattern repeats: a long run of sevens, then a small number in the final column. The olympiad sets two papers of three problems, with the hardest question last on each, and the effect is that the leaderboard is decided largely by partial credit on material designed to be out of reach.

That is why a score should be quoted alongside a medal rather than replaced by one. A gold medal in 2023 covered a wide range of totals. Nadig's particular 37 puts him in the narrow band immediately below the perfect papers, and the two marks he took on the last problem are the reason he is twelfth rather than twentieth.
