PALÄONTOLOGIE

🇮🇳 Aswatha Biju

How it started

The beginning was an encyclopedia at home. At two or three years old she found a picture of an ammonite in it, and her mother, KT Vijayarani, explained that fossils were protected by the government. They went to the Egmore Museum in Chennai to see one.

By her mother's account she asked to go back ten or twelve times, to look at that single ammonite. Most childhood obsessions burn out on the second visit; the detail that stands out in this record is the returning.

The collection

By 2019 the collection ran to 79 verified specimens. The first of them she assembled through her own research, pieces of the order of one to two hundred years old. Later she gathered roughly 26 specimens at the Ariyalur fossil bed in Tamil Nadu, identifying them correctly on site.

That second number is the more significant one. Collecting a fossil that someone else has labelled is a matter of acquisition; recognising one in the field, in the rock, is the skill that separates a collector from a reader of books about collecting.

Where she went and who taught her

Her fieldwork took her to the Ariyalur palaeontological site, to Bharathidasan University in Trichy, and to research institutes including the Zoological Survey of India. Dr Ramkumar of Periyar University gave her the first mentorship and directed her to Ariyalur; Dr R. Nagendra, head of geology at Anna University, guided her afterwards.

Those names matter to the credibility of the record. A child with a shelf of fossils is a hobbyist; a child sent to a specific fossil bed by a university palaeontologist, and subsequently guided by a geology department head, is being taught.

Teaching it back

By 2019 she had conducted fifteen seminars, for school and college students and for research institutes. Her mother's summary of the result is the most concrete claim in the article: "every person she has held a seminar for, can easily differentiate between a normal rock and a fossil."

She also received a special mention award from the state governor at a FICCI FLO event. The seminars are the part of the story that goes furthest beyond a private collection, because they place a twelve-year-old in front of college audiences on a technical subject.

The title, and what supports it

"India's youngest palaeontologist" is the phrase in the headline of the article that documented her. It is worth being precise about its status: no official body is cited as conferring it, and no register of palaeontologists by age exists to test it against.

What can be stated from the reporting is narrower and still unusual: 79 verified specimens at 12, correct field identification at Ariyalur, mentorship from two named university academics, fifteen seminars delivered, and a governor's special mention. The superlative is a description an outlet chose; the record beneath it is the part that stands.

What is documented — and what is not

Firm: her age and class in 2019, her city, her mother's name, the size and origin of the collection, the sites and institutions visited, the two mentors, the seminars and the FICCI FLO recognition.

Open: no source gathered here reports her school, any published paper, any museum accession of her specimens, or anything about her after June 2019. Only one source was found for this record, which is a constraint worth stating plainly. Aswatha Biju was a child at the time of publication, and nothing beyond that reporting appears on this page.
