Ansley Burns — Wunderkind-Biografie

The run

The season 14 results tables record the shape of it. Burns came into the live rounds as a wildcard quarter-finalist rather than through a straight advancement, got through to the semi-finals, and went out in semi-final one on 4 September 2019.

A wildcard is the show's second chance: an act the producers or judges bring back after the earlier rounds have already passed over it. Making the semi-finals from that position means surviving a public vote against the acts that beat you the first time.

The season around her

Season 14 ran from 28 May to 18 September 2019 on NBC, hosted by Terry Crews, with Howie Mandel, Gabrielle Union, Julianne Hough and Simon Cowell judging and the finals staged at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

It was a strong year for young acts. The winner was Kodi Lee, a twenty-three-year-old singer and pianist; the runner-up was the Detroit Youth Choir. The finalists included Emanne Beasha, a ten-year-old opera singer, Tyler Butler-Figueroa, an eleven-year-old violinist, and Benicio Bryant, a fifteen-year-old singer. Burns reached the round below that group.

The golden buzzer question

The research note behind this page describes Burns as a golden buzzer recipient. The season's own list does not support it. The recorded audition golden buzzers for season 14 went to Kodi Lee, Joseph Allen, Tyler Butler-Figueroa, the Detroit Youth Choir and Luke Islam, and the Judge Cuts buzzers to Sophie Pecora, V.Unbeatable, Light Balance Kids and Emanne Beasha.

Burns appears in the results tables as a wildcard quarter-finalist instead. The two accounts cannot both be right, and this page reports the discrepancy rather than choosing a side. Until a broadcast source settles it, the safe description is semi-finalist, not golden buzzer.

What is documented — and what is not

Firm: her age of twelve, her home town of Easley in South Carolina, her act as a singer, her wildcard entry to the quarter-finals, her semi-final place and her elimination on 4 September 2019.

Not documented in the sources gathered here: the songs she sang, the judges' responses, her family, her school, any record deal or release, and anything at all since September 2019. The record rests on a results table, which is reliable about outcomes and silent about everything else.

What a semi-final place is worth

The live rounds of America's Got Talent are a funnel that narrows fast. Dozens of acts reach the quarter-finals, about twenty the semi-finals and ten the final. A twelve-year-old singer who arrives as a wildcard and clears the first of those gates has come through a national public vote at least once.

That is the documented achievement, and it is worth stating precisely because it is so often inflated in retellings. Burns did not win, did not reach the final, and on the available evidence did not receive a golden buzzer. She was one of roughly twenty acts still standing in the second-last round of the biggest talent competition on American television, at twelve.
