MATHE-OLYMPIADE

🇮🇳 Ananda Bhaduri

Thirty-two points in Bath

The 65th olympiad, held in Bath in the United Kingdom, drew 609 contestants. Bhaduri's row reads 7, 7, 2, 7, 7, 2: complete solutions to four problems, and partial credit on the two hardest, for a total of 32 out of 42. That placed him joint fourteenth in the world and won a gold medal.

Two names finished above him with results worth recording for scale. Haojia Shi of China produced the only perfect 42 of the year. Ivan Chasovskikh took second with 40, and Alexander Wang of the United States third with 38. Bhaduri was inside the top fifteen of a field where the top score was reached only once.

The year before

His 2023 appearance, at the 64th olympiad in Chiba, Japan, produced 29 points and rank eighty-two, with silver. On the face of it the improvement to 2024 is three marks. In ranking terms it is sixty-eight places, which is the more revealing figure.

The reason is that a score means nothing without the paper it was earned on. In 2023 five contestants scored a perfect 42 and the field was packed tightly beneath them. In 2024 only one did. The same three extra points were worth far more against the harder set of problems, and a contestant who had been comfortably inside the silver band found himself near the top of the gold one.

The Indian team in both years

India's 2024 contingent was one of its strongest showings on record: Adhitya Mangudy Venkata Ganesh fifth with 35, Bhaduri fourteenth with 32, Kanav Talwar nineteenth with 31 and Rushil Mathur twenty-ninth with 30, all gold, with Arjun Gupta taking silver on 24.

A year earlier the same squad list looked different. In Chiba, Arjun Gupta and Atul Shatavart Nadig took gold on 37 apiece at joint twelfth, Bhaduri and Siddharth Choppara took silver on 29, and Adhitya Ganesh took bronze on 22. Between 2023 and 2024, Bhaduri and Ganesh both moved up a medal class.

What the table records — and what it does not

The firm facts are the organisers' own: the country, six problem scores, totals, ranks, medals, years and host cities, for both appearances. There is no intermediary between the competition and the record, which is what makes a two-year comparison possible at all.

The table publishes nothing beyond that. It gives no age, no date of birth, no school, no city and no photograph, and no source gathered here says how Bhaduri qualified, what he studied afterwards, or whether he competed a third time. Those gaps are recorded as gaps.

Why returning is the real test

Olympiad selection is annual and unforgiving. A place on a national team is not held from one year to the next; it has to be won again through the same sequence of rounds, against a cohort that includes everyone who missed out the first time. Most contestants appear once.

Appearing twice and improving is therefore a different kind of achievement from a single strong result. It rules out the two explanations that a one-off gold cannot quite escape, which are a favourable problem set and a good day. Bhaduri's two rows show a contestant who came back against a harder paper and finished sixty-eight places higher.
