What happened

The fifth edition of the Arab Reading Challenge was decided in a live broadcast on a Monday evening in September 2021. Abu Khalaf, 17, took the title and the Dh500,000 prize from a field of roughly 21 million students drawn from 52 countries.

The competition judges on argument rather than volume. Participants were assessed on their ability to articulate general knowledge, on critical thinking, on communication skills, and on the range of books they had chosen. What distinguished Abu Khalaf, according to the coverage, was the confidence and clarity with which he expressed his ideas and opinions, which is a description of an oral performance rather than of a reading list.

The announcement

The manner of the announcement is the detail that stuck. He did not learn of the result on stage: the UAE ambassador to Jordan arrived at his home unannounced to tell him.

The 2021 final was held during a period when large ceremonies were constrained, and the challenge distributed its moment rather than staging it. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, addressed the broadcast by video message. “Reading will remain our shield against any difficult times,” he said.

The field

The results below him are a map of the competition's reach. Second place went to Sarah Al Daeef of Morocco, third to Diaa Al Qaisum of Saudi Arabia, fourth to Yousra Mohammed Al Imam of Sudan and fifth to Abdul Rahman Mansour Ahmed Mohammed of Egypt.

Five countries in the top five, from the Maghreb to the Gulf to the Nile valley, out of 52 that entered. The challenge has grown at each edition: the third, in 2018, drew more than 10.5 million students from 44 countries. By 2021 that had roughly doubled to 21 million from 52.

What is documented, and what is not

Firm: his age, 17; his country, Jordan; the fifth edition of the Arab Reading Challenge and the Dh500,000 prize; the field of about 21 million students from 52 countries; the judging criteria; the assessment of his confidence and clarity; the surprise visit from the UAE ambassador; the named runners-up; and Sheikh Mohammed's video message.

Not documented in these sources: his exact date of birth, so the birth year here is derived from his reported age; his home town, school and family; how he prepared and what he read; and any direct quotation from him. Nothing in this material follows him beyond September 2021, which means the question of what a Dh500,000 prize at 17 leads to is unanswered here.

Why an oral competition

It would be far simpler to run a reading competition on a written test, and the challenge does not. The final stages are conducted as spoken examinations in Arabic, in front of judges and, at the last stage, an audience. That design decision is the point of the whole exercise.

A written test measures whether a book was read. A spoken examination measures whether it was understood well enough to be defended, in a language whose formal register most children encounter mainly at school. Awarding the title to the competitor who argued most clearly, rather than the one who read most, is what separates the challenge from a summer reading scheme with a very large budget.
