🇺🇸 Tara Adiseshan

She was fourteen, the youngest of the three students who topped the world's largest science fair.

Her project traced the evolutionary relationships between sweat bees and the parasitic nematodes that live on them.

Tara Adiseshan of Charlottesville, Virginia, was 14 when she won a $50,000 award at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Reno, Nevada, in May 2009. Her project identified and classified evolutionary relationships between sweat bees and parasitic nematodes. She was the youngest of the three students who took the fair's top honours that year.

The project

Intel's 2009 release describes the work precisely: Adiseshan identified and classified evolutionary relationships between sweat bees and parasitic nematodes. Sweat bees are a large family of small, often solitary bees; nematodes are roundworms, and the parasitic kinds live in or on a host.

Tracing how two such groups have evolved alongside one another is co-evolutionary systematics — the study of whether a parasite's family tree mirrors its host's. The source used here states the subject and the finding category but not the methods, the number of species examined, or the conclusions, so this page does not describe them.

Fourteen years old

Her age is what made the 2009 result stand out. At 14, Adiseshan was competing against a field weighted heavily toward sixteen- to eighteen-year-olds: her two co-winners that year were 16 and 17.

Intel ISEF accepts finalists from grade nine upward, so fourteen-year-olds are eligible but uncommon at the top of the standings. Placing in the fair's top three at that age means winning a regional affiliated fair first, then surviving a week of judging against students several years further into their schooling.

The gap matters in practice as well as on paper. A fourteen-year-old entering ISEF has had at most a year or two of high-school laboratory access, while the students beside her have typically spent two or three summers in university laboratories. Adiseshan's placing was achieved against that difference.

Three winners, three fields

Intel's announcement, headlined on the fact that three young women took the top honours, lists all three at $50,000. Alongside Adiseshan were Li Boynton, 17, of Houston, Texas, who developed a biosensor using bioluminescent bacteria to detect contaminants in public water, and Olivia Schwob, 16, of Boston, who isolated a gene that improved intelligence in worms.

Evolutionary biology, environmental sensing and genetics — three unrelated disciplines ranked together. That is the structure of the fair's top tier, where judges compare projects that share no common measure.

The fair in 2009

Intel ISEF 2009 was held in Reno, Nevada, with 1,563 finalists from 56 countries and regions. The judging panel numbered around 900 professionals, each holding a doctorate or equivalent experience in their field.

Craig Barrett, then Intel's chairman, put the purpose of the week in plain terms: "The real end point of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair is to elevate the recognition of achievement of the younger generation in academic and learning exercises."

What is documented — and what is not

The Intel press release establishes her name, age, home town, prize and subject. It does not name her school, her mentor, the university or laboratory where the work was done, or her family.

It also stops in May 2009. No source used here reports what Adiseshan studied afterwards, whether the bee and nematode work was published, or what she does now. Her birth year is inferred from being 14 that spring and is approximate. Where the record is silent, this page is silent.

Intel's framing of the 2009 result — three young women at the top of the world's largest pre-college science competition — was the angle the announcement led with, and it is the context in which her name usually appears. The scientific detail of her work has not followed it into the public record.
