مسابقة التهجئة

🇺🇸 Neil Kadakia

Ninth, on hellebore

The National Spelling Bee gives a child one word at a time and no way back. Kadakia reached the sixth round of the 1999 competition before he was handed hellebore, the name of a genus of winter-flowering plants, and spelled it without its second l. Ninth place in a national field is a long way into the tournament; in the format's own terms it is also a failure, which is the cruelty the documentary was built to capture.

Spellbound was released in 2002, nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary, and took $5.7 million at the box office. It is the reason the 1999 bee, rather than any other year, is the one people can describe.

A thousand people praying

Every documentary has one scene that outlives it, and Spellbound's belongs to Kadakia's family. Smithsonian records that his grandfather, in India, paid 1,000 villagers to pray for the boy. It is the detail audiences quote back, and it works on film because it sits at the exact point where devotion, ambition and absurdity meet.

It also carries the film's argument. Kadakia is described by the magazine as upper-middle-class Indian American; the drilling, the expectation and the transnational family investment were all pointed at a single stage. Spellbound is often remembered as a sweet film about word lists. It is closer to a study of what different American households can put behind a child.

Nupur Lala, the Tampa speller who won the 1999 bee on logorrhea, said as much to Smithsonian years later: economic privilege, educational background and family dynamics played a big part in who got through.

Where Neil is now

By the time Smithsonian revisited the eight in 2015, Kadakia had graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, and was a vice-president at a real-estate company. The magazine notes that it confirmed his position through social media rather than an interview, which is a useful flag about the limits of the follow-up.

No source consulted for this page records what he has done since. The company is not named, nor is his degree subject, nor his current city.

What the film's children became

The Smithsonian assessment of the group is unusually plain: all of the spellers featured in Spellbound went to college, and for the most part all have built satisfying careers. Nupur Lala was in her second semester of medical school at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, having read at Michigan, worked as a research assistant at MIT and studied cancer biology in Texas. Harry Altman had a mathematics PhD from Michigan. Emily Stagg, who finished sixth, was a Yale-trained psychiatric nurse practitioner working with children in Connecticut. Ashley White, out on the first day, had a master's in social work from Howard.

Angela Arenivar, whose parents came from Mexico without papers, had become a high-school Spanish teacher and begun a doctorate in Hispanic studies. One of the eight did not get a later chapter: Ted Brigham died in 2007 while at medical school. The magazine reports no cause.

That spread is the honest answer to the question the article's title asks. The spelling bee did not transform any of these lives on its own. It did not have to; it recorded a group of children who were going to work hard at something.

What is documented, and what is not

Firm: Kadakia is from California and was one of eight spellers followed in Spellbound; he finished ninth at the 1999 National Spelling Bee, eliminated in the sixth round on hellebore; Smithsonian describes his family as upper-middle-class Indian American and reports that his grandfather paid 1,000 villagers in India to pray for him; by 2015 he had graduated from UC Berkeley and was a vice-president of a real-estate company.

Not documented: his birth year and age, his school, his parents' names and occupations, his degree subject, the name of the real-estate company, and anything about his life after 2015. The 2015 report on his job is sourced by the magazine to social media, not to him.
