The swagger

The Scripps National Spelling Bee has a house style, and it is monastic. Children approach the microphone, ask for a definition and a language of origin, trace letters on a forearm and return to their seats without expression. It is a competition that trains its participants to give nothing away.

Aouad, the Associated Press wrote, added a novel flair to the bee, demonstrating the kind of confident showmanship one would expect from a professional athlete. After spelling a word correctly he would strut to his seat, point to supporters and mug for the camera. In a hall of still, careful children, this was close to heresy, and the cameras loved it.

Reading the pronouncer's lips

Behind the performance was a piece of technique worth noticing. Aouad is nearsighted, and he would put on his glasses in order to see the pronouncer's lips.

That is not showmanship; it is a competitive edge. At the top of the bee the difference between two spellings often turns on a single ambiguous vowel or a doubled consonant, and the pronouncer's mouth carries information the loudspeakers blur. A speller who can read the shape of a syllable as well as hear it is working with more data than the child beside him. The swagger got the attention. The glasses were the reason he kept getting to use it.

Palatschinken

His 2009 run ended on palatschinken, a thin pancake. He took it without drama: he had tried his best, he said after the bell, and he shook his head bemusedly when he was told the correct spelling.

That reaction is its own kind of poise. The bee gives a child one word and no appeal, and the standard response on the way off stage is a stricken face. Aouad's was closer to curiosity about the answer.

The 2009 bee

The title that year went to Kavya Shivashankar, 13, of Olathe, Kansas, who spelled Laodicean, meaning lukewarm or indifferent in religion or politics, and collected more than $40,000 in cash and prizes along with the champion's trophy. Tim Ruiter, 12, finished second and Aishwarya Pastapur, 13, third. Sidharth Chand, the previous year's runner-up, went out on apodyterium.

The field was a record 293 spellers, the largest the bee had drawn to that point, a figure that says as much about the competition's television profile as about American spelling. Reaching the final rounds of a field that size is the achievement; the word that ends it is close to arbitrary.
