🇺🇸 John Benedict Estrada

A camera, an infrared filter and a teenager from Fresno who could tell when a plant was about to fail.

The $50,000 Gordon E. Moore Award for Positive Outcomes for Future Generations, Regeneron ISEF 2021.

John Benedict Estrada was 16 and living in Fresno, in the middle of California's irrigated farm belt, when he won the $50,000 Gordon E. Moore Award at Regeneron ISEF 2021. His program read infrared and visible-light images from a robotic camera and used them to predict drought stress in plants before the damage was obvious. The award listing is the documented record.

The award

The Gordon E. Moore Award for Positive Outcomes for Future Generations is given at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair to a project judged to have the clearest public benefit. In 2021 it carried $50,000, and the Society for Science listed it against Estrada's name in its announcement of 20 and 21 May.

His entry was a computer program that took infrared and visible-light imagery from a robotic camera and used it to predict drought stress in plants. The organiser's summary states the method and the purpose; it does not publish accuracy figures, field-trial data or the crops tested.

Why infrared sees thirst first

A plant under water stress closes its stomata to hold on to moisture. Transpiration slows, and because transpiration cools leaves the way sweat cools skin, the leaf gets warmer than a well-watered neighbour. That temperature difference shows up in infrared long before a human eye notices wilting or yellowing.

Pairing the infrared band with ordinary visible light is what turns a thermal picture into a diagnosis: the visible image says which pixels are leaf and which are soil, shadow or machinery, and the infrared says how hot each of those leaves is. The interesting engineering is in the software that reconciles the two, which is what Estrada's project addressed.

The setting

Fresno sits in the San Joaquin Valley, one of the most intensively irrigated agricultural regions in the United States, where the timing of water application is a commercial question as much as an agronomic one. A tool that flags stress days earlier changes when a grower turns a pump on.

That practical framing is consistent with the award he won, which is directed at projects promising positive outcomes rather than at pure research. The Moore Award sits alongside the fair's other top honours rather than beneath them: the same year, the $75,000 George D. Yancopoulos Innovator Award went to Michelle Hua of Michigan, and two $50,000 Regeneron Young Scientist Awards went to Catherine Kim and Daniel Shen.

The first virtual ISEF

Regeneron ISEF 2021 was the first edition in the fair's seventy-year history to be held entirely online. More than 1,800 finalists, from 49 US states and 64 countries, competed for over $5 million in awards, presenting and defending their work over video rather than at a booth.

Maya Ajmera, the Society's president and chief executive, put the year in context: "Every single Regeneron ISEF finalist has persevered in their pursuit of science in the face of the myriad challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic." For students whose projects needed laboratory or field access, the preceding twelve months had been the hardest part.

What is documented — and what is not

Firmly on the record: the award, its value, his age, his home town and the description of the program, all published by the organisation that ran the competition.

Nothing in the sources gathered here describes what happened next — no university, no agricultural trial, no company, no patent, no interview after May 2021. The gap is stated rather than filled, because inventing an outcome would be worse than admitting the trail runs out.
