51.24 seconds

World Mental Calculation, publishing the Memoriad 2024 results on 14 December, records the calendar dates discipline as won by Jay Baldiya Jain of India, who solved 125 dates in 51.24 seconds. The event requires the competitor to determine the day of the week for dates drawn from the range 1600 to 2099.

The arithmetic of the result is stark: an average of about 0.41 seconds per date, including reading it. At that speed the calculation cannot be worked step by step in the usual sense. It has to be compressed into a set of learned offsets for century, year, month and day, applied almost as fast as the date can be taken in.

What calendar calculation is

Calendar calculation is one of the oldest disciplines in mental arithmetic and one of the least forgiving. The Gregorian calendar repeats on a 400-year cycle broken by leap-year rules, so a system that handles 1600 to 2099 has to absorb every exception across five centuries.

Because the answer is one of only seven possibilities, guessing is worthless and errors are obvious. Scoring rewards the combination of speed and correctness, which is why a time is meaningless without the number of dates attached to it. The published figure for Jain gives both: 125 dates, 51.24 seconds.

Memoriad 2024

Memoriad 2024 ran from 6 to 10 November in the United Arab Emirates, with 121 mental calculation competitors from twenty countries and nearly thirty further entrants in the memory events. Competitors selected their own disciplines rather than contesting an all-round title, and no overall champion is listed in the results.

The calculation programme covered ten-digit additions, won by Jeonghee Lee of South Korea; eight-digit multiplications and six-digit square roots, both won by Shashank Jain of India; division by five-digit numbers, won by Kaloyan Geshev of Bulgaria; the calendar dates, won by Jay Baldiya Jain; and the Flash Anzan marathon, won by Lee with Siddhi Mukesh Jain of India second.

India's showing in the UAE

Indian competitors appear across the 2024 results table. Shashank Jain took two golds, Parmar Priyansh Kiritbhai and Tambe Vighnesh Vijay took silver and bronze in the additions, Siddhi Mukesh Jain took silver in the Flash Anzan marathon, and Jay Baldiya Jain won the calendar event.

The memory half of Memoriad went the other way: Mongolia won all six memory disciplines, from the numbers marathon to speed cards. Between them, the two countries accounted for a large share of the 2024 podiums, which is the clearest picture of the sport's centre of gravity the published results offer.
