A paper with nothing dropped

The EGMO scoreboard for 2023 lists Yazgan under Turkey with the entry that every olympiad competitor recognises: 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7. Six problems, each marked out of seven, all of them fully solved, for a total of 42 and a shared rank of first.

Perfect papers are not unique at this level, but they are rare enough to be countable. Fourteen contestants reached 42 that year, drawn from Australia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, China, Israel, Turkey, Ukraine and the United States. Yazgan was one of two Turkish names among them, alongside Melek Gungor.

The second gold, in Georgia

The following year the olympiad moved to Tskaltubo in Georgia. Yazgan returned and scored 36 out of 42, taking gold a second time at the shared rank of sixth.

Her 2024 placing was a three-way tie on 36 points with Netta Ilani of Israel and Angela Liu of the United States. The scoreboard does not separate contestants who finish level, so all three stand at sixth on the published table.

How the competition is marked

EGMO's results pages give a full breakdown rather than a summary. Each contestant appears with her country code, her marks on problems one to six, her total, her rank and her medal, which is why a perfect paper is visible as six sevens rather than as a single number.

The structure also explains the clusters. With only a handful of possible totals near the top, joint ranks are common, and in 2023 the top of the table was shared by fourteen contestants rather than topped by one. A competition that refuses to break its own ties is unusual in sport and ordinary in mathematics, where the mark is the answer.

What is documented - and what is not

The record here comes from two official scoreboards, with a third consulted for context. They establish the scores, the ranks, the medals and the countries. They establish nothing else.

No birth year, age, school, home city, photograph or quotation appears in the sources used here, and no Wikipedia article on Yazgan was found. Her name is also written without Turkish diacritics in some listings, which is a transliteration difference rather than a second competitor. Everything absent from the scoreboards is absent from this page, which is the only honest way to write about a school-age competitor.

Why a perfect score still has to be repeated

A maximum score settles one question completely: on that pair of mornings, against those six problems, nothing was missed. It says less about the years on either side, which is why the 2024 result matters to the record.

Returning meant a second national selection and a different set of problems in a different country, and Yazgan finished in the top six again. Two golds at consecutive editions, one of them perfect, is a fuller account of a competitor than any single number on a scoreboard.
