🇮🇹 Carolina Cassani

She and her partner took five seconds off a world best time that had stood over the U19 women's pair

World Rowing Under 19 champion, Plovdiv, 9 August 2026 • 7:10.77 — new Under 19 Women's Pair World Best Time • bow seat

World best times in rowing usually fall by fractions, and usually only when the water is flat and the tailwind is generous. At the 2026 World Rowing Under 19 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, Carolina Cassani and Letizia Martorana of Italy rowed the Under 19 women's pair in 7:10.77 — almost five seconds faster than the previous world best time for the boat class. Cassani rowed in the bow seat. The crew took the world title as well as the record, ahead of Uzbekistan and Australia.

The coxless pair is the boat that exposes technique most completely. Two athletes, one oar each, on opposite sides, with no coxswain and no third or fourth rower to average out an error. Any imbalance in force between the two seats turns the hull off its line, and correcting that costs speed continuously rather than once. Crews spend seasons learning to match each other before they are fast. It is, for that reason, the class where a large improvement on a world best time is least likely to be an accident of conditions alone.

The bow seat, which Cassani occupied, carries a specific responsibility in a coxless boat. The bow rower has the clearest view down the course behind them and takes the steering, usually via a toe-mounted rudder linkage, while also having to match the rhythm set at stroke rather than setting it. Steering an eight-hundred-metre-long line while rowing at racing rate is an under-described skill; a pair that wanders costs itself more distance than most spectators realise.

Plovdiv is a fast course, and the championships as a whole produced high-quality racing — 660 athletes from 55 nations across 14 boat classes, with sixteen champion crews crowned. World Rowing's own summary of the regatta led on the Italian pair's time above every other result of the four days, which is a reasonable indicator of how it was regarded inside the sport. A margin of nearly five seconds over a standing world best is not a marginal improvement; it is a re-setting of what the boat class is understood to be capable of at that age group.

The pair had raced together earlier in the season at the 2026 European Rowing Under 19 Championships in Brandenburg, Germany, according to World Rowing's own photo records from that regatta. Continuity of partnership is close to decisive in the pair — the boat rewards accumulated hours between the same two people more than almost any other, because the matching is specific to the pairing rather than transferable.

Behind them, Uzbekistan's Rayhon Sattorova and Aydana Smetullaeva took silver and Australia's Piper Hallam and Emma Peele bronze, in a final that also included Romania, Croatia and Lithuania. Italy finished the regatta with three world titles in the sculling and sweep classes combined, including Alizee Ribolzi's win in the women's single, and took silver in the inaugural mixed double.

A world best time is a different quantity from a world title. The title says a crew was the fastest boat in that final on that day; the time says that no crew in the history of the age group has gone faster over the distance. Taking almost five seconds off the standing mark in a two-person sweep boat, where speed comes from matched technique rather than from raw power alone, is the kind of margin that normally requires a step change in how the boat is being rowed.

The caveat that any honest reading has to include is the course and the conditions. World best times in rowing are not records in the athletics sense, precisely because water, wind and altitude are not standardised — World Rowing recognises them as best times rather than records for that reason, and Plovdiv is known as a fast venue. What that qualification cannot explain away is that every other crew in the same final, on the same water, on the same morning, was slower.
