The 1990 final

UPI reported the win on the day: fibranne was the winning word for the Seattle girl, sponsored by The Seattle Times. The runner-up was Eric Enders. Dimak was 13, which placed her towards the younger end of a field that is dominated by eighth-graders working in their last eligible year.

Her remark about the eleven words is the detail that lasted. A champion who never faced an unfamiliar word had, in effect, finished the competition before it reached her limits - a rare thing in a contest designed to find them.

What she remembered later

TIME's 2007 feature on past winners recorded her own summary of how she looked at 13: "I had big glasses and braces." It is a small line that says something accurate about the bee's place in American life. The competition puts children on national television at the least flattering age, and the images last.

The same feature recorded what became of her. She had taken a degree in biochemistry and was a stay-at-home mother of three in a military family.

A champion's afterwards

The bee produces one champion a year and then, for most of them, silence. TIME's where-are-they-now format exists because the question is asked so often and answered so rarely: the winners return to school the following week and grow up out of public view.

Dimak's answer in 2007 was unglamorous and entirely ordinary, which is the point. A national title at 13 is a fact about a childhood, not a prediction about a life, and the bee's alumni include doctors, lawyers, teachers and parents in roughly the proportions any other group produces.

The 1990 competition also sits in a period the bee has since outgrown. Fields then were counted in the low hundreds rather than the high hundreds, the television audience was smaller, and a champion's press attention lasted about a day. What the two sources used here preserve - a word, an age, a sponsor, a runner-up, and seventeen years later a life - is more than most winners of that era retain.

What the word was

Fibranne is a fabric made from spun rayon, a word borrowed into English from French. It is the type of entry that rewards a speller who has studied how French words are naturalised: the doubled n and the terminal e are the trap, and both follow a pattern rather than an accident.

The bee's word lists lean on exactly this kind of borrowing. A champion is usually someone who has learned the rules by which English absorbs other languages, rather than someone who has memorised a longer list than everyone else.

What is documented, and what is not

Documented: the 1990 championship, the word fibranne, her age of 13, the Seattle Times sponsorship, the runner-up Eric Enders, her statement about knowing all eleven words, her quoted memory of glasses and braces, and TIME's 2007 account of a biochemistry degree and three children in a military family.

Not documented in these sources: her school, her married name, her parents, and anything after 2007. This page does not extend the record past the last dated source.
