Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646–1716) was a German polymath who made fundamental contributions to mathematics, physics, logic, philosophy, and technology. Independently of Isaac Newton, he developed calculus in the 1670s — and it is Leibniz's notation (dy/dx, the integral sign ∫) that mathematicians use worldwide today.
In philosophy, Leibniz is best known for his 'Monadology' — a metaphysical theory proposing that reality consists of simple, non-spatial units called monads. He also proposed the Principle of Sufficient Reason (everything has a reason) and the Principle of the Identity of Indiscernibles (no two distinct things are exactly alike in every respect).
Leibniz developed binary arithmetic — the foundation of all digital computing — and designed a calculating machine that could multiply and divide. He founded the Berlin Academy of Sciences and served courts across Europe, including the House of Hanover.
Despite his enormous contributions, Leibniz died neglected. His bitter priority dispute with Newton over calculus damaged his reputation, and only his secretary attended his funeral. History has since recognized him as one of the most versatile intellects who ever lived.
